I have a 1990 import Non-Turbo and want to change the oil soon. What weight of oil should I use?..Also, how much oil does the engine take, including the filter?

Any help would be appreciated..JEZ300Z

Maybe change the question to 'what oil is everyone else using and have they noticed any differences/problems?'

I was at Silvia the other day and they plonked in Castrol Magnetec. I have been informed by some Z owners that Mobil 1 (although probably the best F/S oil on the market) is not suitable for Z's. Engine noises appear. This is probably because it is 0-50 oil. I have also been told that a premium 10-30 (F/S) is the best to go for. Thats all I know. Other comments on this would be interesting.

Hi,

I use castrol RS in my TT and the engine runs quiter than with conventional oil and I also get better oil pressure, also the additives in the synthetic oil begin working at lower temperatures than conventional oil and are less prone to burning on turbo bearings than standard oils. Hope this might help

Hi Jez, Jez here, weird...

I have only used Mobil 1 for the last 5 years, I have never heard anyone say it's caused a problem, quite the opposite. I went for it all that time ago as 300zx.net went through several major discussions and Mobil1 always came out on top. (Anyhow, most of these people were in the US, running in a different climate, could make a difference)

Anyhow, what ever you do, go for a fully synthetic oil to look after that engine and change it often - not every 6k!

Used to use Castrol Formula RS.

Now use Redline 10W40 F/S.

Not noticed any difference :-|

Jez,

I spoke to a guy who owned a 90TT auto (before he sold it) and he tried mobil 1 and experienced top end rattles and even bottom end rattles when cold. He changed to a different F/S oil and the noises stopped, engine hot or cold. He was probably using a viscosity that was too thin. What are you using? 0-40,0-30,5-30,10-30,15-50 ......

Andy

Was using Mobile1 and experienced a lot "lifter ticking" at startup.

I thought it to be normal but when I changed to Redline 10W-40

the tick was gone!

Thicker oil is also better when pushing the engine limits.

It leaves a thicker oil film on all the bearings.

I also heard very good opinions from people that are using Redline

while racing.

It dramatically improoved engine wear. But again it's just

what I heard, no hard facts.

Anyway, it's Redline all the way for me.

I have just spoken to Mobil UK who said that medium mileage cars are best ran on Mobil 1 15w-50. 15 being the weight. The guy I spoke to used 0w-40 which is very thin hence engine noises. It sounds like 0w F/S oils are best left for very new engines and then those engines can remain using 0W. Z Viking, what Mobil 1 did you use?

Andy

Hi,

Well - just looked at what my oil is - 0-40, and I do get the occasional sticking lifter. So, perhaps I should try redline Viking? (Anyone want my bottle of Oil!!!)

The only this is, that I was put off redline a few years back as the MT90 oil was really bad for my brand new box, for which I ended up getting a new one! Yeah - I know that MT90 was replaced by another oil, but this was a few years back.

Jez.

I had a look at http://www.redlineoil.com/ ...

Found the ideal oil for Steve...

2WT - for drag racing and circle track qualifying where the lowest internal friction is desired!!!

Anyhow, being serious, after reading the page, 10w-40 is the redline oil for a 300zx!

I will phone the Uk dealer to see what the price is, I seam to remember that they offered a % off for being the main dealer is this country.

I was using Mobil 1 (see? I learned how to spell it :)) 5W-50.

The reason that the ticking is gone could be that the oil pressure is

higher on start-up now when I'm using a thicker oil.

Give it a try Jez!

Thanks for all your comments.

The problem I have, is that I don't know what type of oil is currently in the engine. It does run smoothly, however, with no ticking on startup etc. (Unlike my previous Z31)

The general concensus seems to be to go with synthetic oil of a heavier weight/viscosity than the Mobil 1 0w-40.

I too, have heard thet it is a bit thin for the 300ZX engine..especially as I don't have turbos to look after.

I previously always used Castrol GTX of various weights..depending on the time of year(e.g.10w-40 in the winter)

If anyone wants to call mobil direct. They are on freephone 0800 040111. The reply was instant. They will advise on the correct viscosity F/S Mobil 1 for your car. This can vary for the same car depending on age, mileage etc.

Jez:

Id be interested to know what prices you can get the RedLine stuff for. I bought a load of it (engine oil, gearbox oil & ATF - a good few changes worth!) from DemonTweeks - it was the only place I could find that would / could get everything I wanted - got a discount from them - but all in all I spent hundreds on oil!

Cheers

I use Mobil 1 0w-40 and don't experience any unusual noises, hot or cold.

I'm told that a thinner oil is better especially on high performance engines so that the oil can lubricate all the engine parts quickly.

I change it every 3000miles just for peace of mind.

Hi,

Im running castrol formula RS as posted further up with no noises, but forgot to put the weight. The car is a 1990 TT with 54,000 miles and the oil weight is 10W60, and everythings great.
