Hi guys, just sold my honda prelude and looking to buy a 300zx. I've got some questions for you:

1) Is there anyone who owned a prelude previously? How did it feel when you changed to the zx?

2) Is there any space at the back seats for an adult? Virtually no space with my prelude...

3) I was paying £1100 per year for my insurance. Is it likely that I have to pay more for the zx (I am 26, 6 years no claim bonus)

4) UK car or import?

5) Automatic or manual (never driven an automatic car - is it really boring?)

6) I am willing to spend up to 5k - will I get something decent?

Any help will be appreciated...

Take a look through my "disgruntled impreza owner" thead. Some of the same questions were answered in there.

Seems to me that a few folk here are upgrading their car to a Z. I still can't figure out why Z's are so cheap?? That's a lot of car for bu99er all money.

Yiannis,

Best advice is to spend some time trawling this site, and others, and you will find the answers to most,if not all,of your questions.

Also I believe there are a few cars for sale as well.

Good luck,

F.T.

1) Dont know!

2) I have got 3 mates in the back both over 6 foot, they where very crampt but its OK for the 10 min drive to the pub. :D

3) I am paying £900 TPFT but I was only 22 at the time. If you get a Z over 10 years old, or 10 years old, you can get it insured on classic insurance which I know some people are paying less than £500 a year full comp with mods. It also frees your NCB to due on a 2nd car which most require.

4) Up to you. UK cheaper to insure, Jap tend to be lower mileage and less rust.

5) Do a search on Manual V Auto and you will find that much blood as been spilt over that argument. Manuals are harder to find, because they made less manuals and they are more in demand. Its personal choise.

6) You should be able to get a decent Z for 5k. As with most things you get what you pay for. Look on autotrader and have a look. I paid £4,500 2 years ago and it was a shed, but getting better. But the engine was in very good condition. The prices have gone down a little since then but not much. I think in a year or 2 they will stablise then start to go up as all the rusty knackerd ones go.

Hope you find a nice one and hope you join us.

Happy hunting.

Stuart.

It is a lot of car for the money.

T-top, Air Con, 16 inch alloys, Turbo, ABS.

I think they are cheap because they are hugely over looked. For start the Supra is more well known, Mitsubishi are more known for making sports cars with the GTO, FTO, Starion and Galant, and Nissan have the Skyline and Z as major sports cars and nothing inbetween, so they dont get the reputation as having great sports cars.

There have been many stories of people asking what the car is when they see it. People dont know about it and dont know what it can do.

I think the only thing that hasn't been answered recently elsewhere is the question of rear seat space:

You should be able to fit two reasonably big adults in on the passenger side without much trouble, but space behind the driver is usually pretty small!

I noticed the same with my old S13. Hardly anyone knew what it was. Guess their rarity and peoples unfamiliarity with Nissan sports cars works in our favour. It just makes the car's stand out in a crowd, especially when parked next to the common as muck Audi TTs and Imprezas :D

Gotta wonder what Nissan marketing is all about though. They win first prize for having the most underrated cars. They make some bloody good sports cars and don't even make the effort to sell them

thanks for your replies guys and well done for having such a good forum!

i have prelude also, well its my wifes, 94 l plate, and to be fair i think its build quality is better, but thats all. the prelude is great to drive but when i get out of that and into my 300 i get the 300 grin !! its quicker by far, handling is incredible in comparison but she gets 20 miles more out of a tank full than me. But unless more than 2 are going we take the Z, even she prefers mine which says alot, but we not got quite enough money to get her one YET!!!

Yiannis,

Sorry for the Greek language guys...

I currently own a 1997 Honda Prelude Type SH. My step brother used to own a 1990 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo with manual transmission. Right now I'm currently want to buy a 1990 Nissan 300ZX non turbo with an automatic transmission because my Honda Prelude is in the shop to do engine modifications. I have to say that the 300ZX isn't comparable to a Prelude. The 300ZX feels like a true sports car and the Prelude feels somewhat like a sports car. If you want that sports car feeling, you will love the 300ZX. The twin turbo model really kick ass. I did 150mph on my step brother's twin turbo, wow, the car still feel very stable, still pulls hard at high RPM on 5th gear unlike the Prelude. The Prelude is pretty strong on top speed for a car with a 4 cylinder engine but just not comparable with the 300ZX
