For the last week , from a cold start, for the first mile or two, my 96TT makes an intermittent definate dry bearing noise (a quiet squeal really) from the transmission area.

Seems to disapear when clutch pedal is pushed down.

Once warmed up it is fine all day. Is this what knackered thrust bearings do?

Is the clutch bearing on the way out? At idle it can be heard very quietly rumbling.

The clutch is original and has done 45,000M

Any advice appreciated.

My local main dealer has quoted £536 all in. Is this reasonable?

£536 for what?

Just to change the bearing or the clutch?

I got a clutch change for £100 + VAT which included changing the thrust bearing.

Sorry, yes £536 for a complete clutch fitted.

a clutch release bearing will make a noise when the clutch pedal is depressed.

if the noise goes when the pedal is depressed its prob in the gearbox, more than likely the primary shaft bearing, as this is what you are stopping from turning when you press the clutch.

I thought rattling noise with the clutch out that goes when the clutch is in is the thrust bearing.

£536 is not bad for a clutch change, however that is a stock clutch.

My cost for a recent clutch change where.

£377 for the clutch. (It is uprated though)

£100+VAT for fitting.

£70+VAT for skimming the flywheel.

£576.

However, looking at the costs now, its OK. I dont think the cost of skimming the flywheel would be incuded in that price. Ask them.

I thing that price is a standard price for a Z clutch change. I have invoices for its last clutch change which cost around teh £550 mark.
