firstly i,d like to say hello to old friends and hi to the new members who have jumped on board since my last visit .

my zed has been off the road for about 18 months now but ive just took the bit between my teeth and thought enough is enough and have set to work on getting the old girl back on the road.

as you would expect having not started her for 12 months ive got some issues . the main one being she refuses to start .

im 99.99% sure the fuel pump has failed .

im getting ignition live at the pump but its silent (it was always a little noisy before so i know its not working .

my query is im only getting a live reading at one wire and im not sure whether thats dedicated to the fuel guage which is working fine .

im just wondering whether it could be the fuel pump ecu .

does anyone know whether i should have more than one live .

 

i know the fuel will need draining and new stuff putting in once the dodgy part is identified .

 

has anyone got a known good fuel pump , possibly a fuel pump ecu for sale for a tt model

Welcome back Andy and good to hear you still have the Z. You should be able to hear the fuel pump prime up as soon as you turn the key mate.

alright gaz . yes mine used to be fairly loud but now its silent . i think its the pump that gone but i was just wondering if it could be a power feed problem . ie ecu or resistor .

who,s the tech guru on here now jeff,s not around gaz . has anyone took over as the obe wan kenobi of zeds.

Hi Andy, the ignition live is a slight red herring, it means at least the fuel pump fuse and relay is working, but the pump speed / operation is controlled by a seperate ecu on the earth side.

 

Now this means you can read the 12v but without the earth from the ecu the pump will not run, during normal operation the fuel pump ecu ramps the speed up and down by changing the earth potential not the live which stays at a steady voltage. So you could have a faulty ecu, the pump it self can be earthed to run at full speed to test the pump and see if the engine will then start.

 

The other thing to remember the pump only runs if it sees a cas signal so a loose or bad connection on the cas can cause the same issue, will dig the pump connections in the morning so you can try earthing it on the correct cable.
