P.S. Didn't Nissan do a ltd. edition Primera in that type of Pearl paint? LOL!

Time to remortgage the house Ajay, this stuff is called Chameleon, Standox do it, bad news is average respray on a car say about a grand, well that's close to how much the paint can cost on it's own, if you get the proper stuff, available in limited colours.

Superb - just had an offer on my house, threw it back cos it was too cheap so may hear by 3pm this afternoon of around the money that I actually want for it....THEN (and there is a point to this...honestly) after I have cleared all debts, everywhere, I will have about £20K clear.... Where's Standox? Got a number for them?

My Red Zed is about to be transformed...I can just feel some Before and After pictures coming on. And it may be time to get my MR2 out of the garage again, polish her up a bit and use that while the Zed's in....

You crazy dude, cant locate number at the moment, but they usually are in most decent car mags, or phone a top body shop from adverts in mags to get an idea of price per litre, then sit down and ask for general rough total cost, good luck !!

Smithy

..."Crazzzzyyy Horses, whoooo...whoooo!"

Go for it kiddo, spend that 20K 'till there's nothing left and your car resembles Richard Pryor's Saab Turbo in the film "Moving" after he lets that nutter drive it to Boyssy, Idaho for him...LOL!

I've got a mate who has had his Escort Cosworth painted exactly the same colour, and it works out about £320 per litre of paint. I was told to get my Z done it would cost about £5 - £6000. But bloody hell, does his cossie look smart!! - even though it is a Dagenham Dustbin!!

LOL...

Dagenham Dustbin, that's made my day that...I feel a new thread coming on!

Was hoping I'd never hear about that name again. Standox...GRRRRRRRR ! ! ! !

They have a 'specialist' down here in the South West... who I went to see 2 months ago. It was an hour and a half drive but I was prepared to spend the money... but when I got there they thought I was having a laugh ! When they asked how much I thought it was going to cost (and I got the answer right - 4k upwards) they took me seriously.... but the head guy told me that though they didn't like turning custom away, they don't like doing these jobs. He said it messes up their general operating pracedure...and so if I wanted it done I'd have to leave them with a blank cheque...and book my car in for 2 years. Yep...you read that correctly...2 YEARS !

I said I knew the finish was good, but didn't think it'd be that hard.... well... the response I got was that the work involved would only take a couple of weeks....but they weren't prepared to rearrange their workshop in order to do it... so they'd leave the Z in a corner and work on it as and when they get the chance.

Well...that pissed me off.... but on my way out he also said.... "to be honest, you'd be better off just selling the car and buying something something better".

*blood boiling just thinking about it*

I figured that might just be due to the location (can never get anything decent here in Cornwall) so I e-mailed Standox.... no response. Tried calling.....never got an answer. I gave up. for that kind of money I expect a service that matches the paint.

*turns round and walks out cursing the name*

Cheekey f**kin' twat, I'd have decked him there and then if he'd said that to me!!!

There are loads of paint shops that do nice pearl combinations, check Max Power and EVO etc. etc. Seen some cracking R5GT Turbo's in there over the years.

4K and two years jail sentence, f**k that, no paint job is worth that!

oh yeah..... just in case anyone here 'does' want to try their luck... you can find all the info you need at the international site.... www.standox.com

Took me ages to find them back then when I was searching... but when I finally did locate what I was looking for... I made a basic page for future reference.

The colour I wanted was the 2nd on this page... http://www.jayen.net/paint.htm

P.S. So he couldn't tell you all that over the phone then? Wanker!

That was my feeling too ! lol Though unfortunately I don't have the build required to deck anyone.

And nope....obviously they're too exclusive to say over the phone... cause I was told I had to take it to them so they could "assess the preperation that'd be required".

I was soooooooooooo close to having this done on my Z, I was quoted at £250 per litre, needing 4/5 litres for a full respray.

I'm glad I didn't now, somebody else has it!

The bodyshop I'm using are going to do the same sort of finish for me using 3 coulours instead of the 7 in this particular paint job. should have the same kind of result, though not as extreme.

Car goes in on Monday, so hopefully in about three weeks somebody can tell me how to post a pic of my new paint job and spoiler.

John

I think you can even get a paint job like that from Nissan. I have seen a couple of MICRAS!!! with the same kind of paint (there is one only a few streets away from me).

Volvo do it as well.

Andy

that's my wheels he's got !

www.btinternet.com/~powerlord

ok, yeh and the local nissan garage has got loads of micras with the same paint colour, so there must be cheaper options with the same finish.

Hmmm...don't know if I want to look the same as a Micra, finish-wise....

Maybe I'll get a friend of mine to airbrush a dragon down the sides, with the mouths ending at exhausts, or something.

Bummer about your experience, Jayen. Think I'll go somewhere else if they are going to treat Zed owners like that.

Ajay,

those Micras seem to have an extremely good finish. I can take pictures of the one around the corner from me if you like.

My point is that I can give you the details of an EXTREMELY good paint shop who are linked to a Nissan dealer I use and I'm sure they'd have no trouble doing a really good job on your car. They did a great job on my car and I'm sure they'd have no trouble getting any official Nissan colour.

If you want details, just send me an email.

Andy

Has anyone one seen one of these finishes on a yellow car? I've been looking everywhere (and have been told there are a couple) but I've been unable to track them down.

All of these quotes that you are getting for paint is a horrific. My dad has done some paint jobs on cars and has some 2 tone paint. My sister got him to spray her Metro with it so it had a purple colour in the shade and dark green colour in the light and a strange mixture when the light hits it from an angle. Guess how much the paint cost!!

£7 a litre

reduced from £15

This £300+ is madness.

I think that the cheaper paint you refer to is probably a pearlescent paint (although it still sounds a VERY cheap price for that).

The paint that people are talking about here is often referred to as a 'flip'. A mate of mine used to do restoration and spraying and explained it to me. He wouldn't touch it as it is SO difficult to get a good job. Basically, the paint particles have to be aligned in the same direction to get the effect right and that takes specialist equipment and real craftsmanship and skill in the spraying.

For those considering it, bear in mind that while it looks great when perfect, as soon as you get the slightest imperfection (e.g. a pin sized dent caused by a stone - even one that hasn't broken the surface) it is REALLY obvious because the angle of the paint moves and highlights it !

Having said all that, personally I love it and would love to have it done - and that purple / blue combination looks great !

My mate said that if I wanted it, I should look at a car done by the person who was going to do mine. And particularly check difficult to reach areas. Again, the problem is that imperfections are SO obvious.

Hope this is of some help ...

Dave

Hairsy, think that your mate was bluffing you! Or maybe it was an older version of the paint. This is what I found on the net about this chromulasion paint. Website is :

http://www.pcreprints.com/eprint/flex/

if you want to have a look.

These unique ChromaFlair colour-shifting pigments have been developed and are manufactured by Flex Products in Santa Rosa, California, and their makeup is as fascinating as their visual effects. The key to these paints are synthesized flakes that are one micron thick—or about 1/50th the thickness of a human hair. Each flake is made up of several layers, laid on symmetrically. At the centre is an opaque, mirrorlike aluminium core covered on both sides by a layer of glasslike magnesium fluoride.

Finally, over each glass layer is an ultra-thin, semi-transparent layer of chrome. Production tolerances are so tight they’re measured in atoms. Light passes into each flake through the two outer layers and reflects off the aluminium core, being refracted by the glasslike layer. In fact, it’s the thickness of this layer that determines the colour range you’ll see in a given pigment. Because the flakes are symmetrical, it doesn’t matter which side is facing outward. Plus, even on the microscopic scale, they’re much smoother than conventional metallic flakes, so they provide better reflectivity and more saturated colours.

One of the nice things about this paint is that, because the ChromaFlair pigment contains no organic materials, their colour effect won’t fade over time. Should spot repainting be necessary due to bodywork, colour matching is easy, since there’s no variation in the eight basic types of flakes

ChromaFlair® light interference pigments are setting a new standard for the highest colour performance in automotive and industrial paints. These paints are easy to apply and easy to repair. Paint colours range from eye-catching colour shifts with pizzazz, to very sophisticated or subtly unique colours.

F**kin' 'ell Dave, that sorted you out matey! And to think that Ajay is a she Z chick!

Impressario! REZPECT SHE Z WOMAN!!!...LOL!

Thanks for that wealth of factual info Ajay... was well researched. Had me smiling again actually... but after looking through their distributors... it seems that only the Standox range is available in the UK - which after my experience will never be a consideration to me. So...back to the pouting for me.

If anyone else looked and found a different manufacturer distributing in the UK (which I missed) then please correct me.

Jayen,

I've been doing some more research while ostensibly working (but why break a habit of a lifetime and actually DO some...?) and have found a chap in Reading that knows all about the Chromalusion paint and stuff. I have spoken to the main chap who has spoken to this chap for this info. However, I would rather speak to the paint sprayer himself, so I have asked the garage owner to ask him to give me a ring when he comes in at 11.30. Apparently he normally works on Jag cars, so at least that's some credibility.

As soon as I have spoken to the Paint Sprayer himself, I'll post details of the findings - costs, times etc.

WTS.

....anxiously waiting in anticipation.
