Unversed as I am in things of this nature....how easy is it to get a polished finish on the plenum chamber? I'm talking about doing it 'in situ' with nothing more than...what? Rag and a bit of metal polish...I really don't know....can any of you people please advise me???

Not much chance I wouldn't have thought - it has a rough cast finish !

I thought it was a pretty smooth finish....shows what I know! There again, I haven't seen the motor for 32 weeks............

You need to be really agressive when polishing your plenum! Give it lots of really hard elbow grease, or even get some sort of mechanical aid to speed things up! Some sort of paste would be good too, or even better, get someone else to do it for you! Don't do it too much though, as it may turn a funny colour and fall off, making you go blind into the bargain! Also, wear gloves to avoid things like growths on your palms.

Nelson enjoys a good polish every now and then, and I understand that Duffman has enjoyed this torture too!

:D :p

No way will you be able to polish the plenum in situe, we'll not and get a decent finish.

there is a 'texture' on the plenum that neesds to be sanded off before you even think about using cutting and polishing compounds.

Also consider that it is an alloy and as such, after polishing is liable to oxidisation with a white dusty compound forming on the surface, so you really need to laquer it after you've polished it.

Anyway here's the type of pulishing materials you need: Frost Auto Restoration

Dick300 got his powder coated and refinished. It looked very good and smooth. I am sure the alloy wheel refinishers could do it

Is your plenum fitted at the mo?you said SE were doing your car,They do polish them they offered me a price of £250 inc remove and fitting.

Speak to the DUFFMAN hes the daddy of polished plenums amongst other things :D

alot of work involved in doing this.

First off, unless you want an engine bay FULL of metal filings etc and shorted electrical conections then forget doing it in the car ;)

This is quite a job tbh - not massiveley difficult but you need to be VERY patient ;) Basically, you need to sand it down to a smooth surface and then polish it......

Remember to do this you need to remove the plenum - read that as a PITA job and new gaskets for:

Upper-lower intake gasket

AAV gasket

EGR gaskets

May as well do the PCVs and hoses...

Also replace the water hoses...

You'll have around £200 worth of gaskets and hoses to buy by the end of it so.....

Thanks guys.......

Oh well, think I'll forget that for the moment.

There was me thinking a bit of spit and polish would do the trick.....as if!!

Yes motor is out at SE - but it should be going back in any day. I really don't want to delay it any - also can't justify ANOTHER £250 for purely cosmetic end product.

If you get the plenum to me it won't cost you £250 ;)

Let me know ;)
