As titled, I need some help. Just purchased my first zed today, and she's apparently running in safety mode (only 6 or 7 psi boost).

I'm in the medway and swale area.

Anyone close by that can help me? Would be massively appreciated!

Also worth mentioning there's a strong petrol smell when you boot it...

Don't know if this is normal either! :(

Hopefully a local will be along shortly to assist with you ECU diagnostic. A fuel smell can be caused over time by the jubilee clips under the bonnet working their way slightly loose, allowing fuel vapour to pass. Go round with a screwdriver and check tighten all of these. The picture below gives an idea of where all the clips are but follow along the fuel lines tightening them all. Another common fuel leak point is the small hose that links the fuel rail under the plenum. You may be able to see this by removing the throttle cable cover trim piece and having a good look around!

Thanks mate, will give these a look over later on.

The guy I bought it from has said:

If you disconnect the battery for 30 mins it will reset the fault code.

He then tells me how to reset the alarm system after doing so.

Is this a good idea?

Thanks

You can check fault codes yourself without needing ConZult. The codes are here http://www.300zx.org.uk/ecu_codes.htm

Two methods I know of: screwdriver and potentiometer on the ECU itself or shorting out a couple of pins in the Consult socket https://z32.wikispaces.com/ECU+Diagnostics

Video on the pin method [video=youtube_share;D_74OxFN_y8]

PS if you reset the fault code, it will come back if still faulty. Step 11 in that link shows how to clear codes without disconnecting battery.

Thanks both

Silly as it sounds, just been out to the car (lunch break) and tried with a paperclip to short it out. The socket in mine is the other way up than the one in the video. So did top left instead of bottom right (the 2 pins to short)... BUT... I can't seem to do it. Maybe the bloody paperclip is too big, I don't know, but the check engine light doesn't flash.

However, when I first switch the car to ON, the "POWER" light flashes for a few seconds, then goes out. This normal?

I'll take the wooden panel off later on and use the other method to see what fault code its throwing up.

Side note, 2 (i think only 2) of the warning lights on the dash aren't illuminating. I believe they're supposed to be the seat belt, and door open lights. (see below)

also, this is the lead the seller chucked in with the car... not much use to me though is it? :

Not normal, it's the car telling you there are stored error codes.

Lovely...

Oh well, least I'm learning some new things :)

Just need to get these things sorted then enjoy her properly!

Hi guys

Ok I've just been and checked for ecu fault codes using the ecu led method.

I have fault code 53 showing up.

Anyone know what this is and what would be likely to cause it?

As for the strong smell of petrol mentioned above, the car has an aftermarket decat full exhaust fitted.

Would this code 53 be the reason for safety boost?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, should have just Googled that one.

Right o2 sensor.

So next question, how do I check the sensor connection? Assuming that's all it is.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone - maybe even this forum - had a copy of the workshop manual for members to refer to. Oh look, http://www.300zx.co.uk/cgi-bin/manual.cgi:wink:

Plus downloadable here https://z32.wikispaces.com/Factory+Service+Manual

Even though I'm not mechanical, I always like to be able to check stuff. I'm sure someone helpful who does know will pop along and answer your q, but knowing your way around the manual helps you spot when other people are guessing!

Just had a quick look and it's Diagnostic Procedure 30 in EF & EC pages 126 - 128 you need.
