So..

driving back from staffordshire last night, not a single jot of a problem with the zed.. plain sailing all the way.. all guages fine.. pulled onto drive.. literally put foot on brake slowing down on drive way.. came to a stop.. engine dies completely.

Started it again... starts alright... heavy vibration from the engine bay.. wobbling a fair bit.

So left it.. sleepless night worrying at size of bills to repair such a problem.... and what it might be.. started it this morning, bonnet up in daylight so can see what's going on.. no fluid leaks, timing belts all moving properly, nothing missing or visibly broken (shame that because they're the cheap bits)... but engine is NOT happy.. gave the throttle a quick dab just to test.. doesn't go above 3,000 revs. Exhaust note is all over the place.. so it sounds like it's misfiring (just no bangs!!)...

So.. what am I looking at folks? It sounds very expensive.. my mechanical knowledge ain't great but I'm guessing it's plugs/cylinders/valves type area?

Haven't touched it again this morning, haven't called garages or bought bits yet because want to make sure I do it right. Also if ANY of you are in Northampton or close who could give a hand with some expertise please reply or call me on 07740 092550.

Cheers All

Lee, dont` despair, although you could have a serious problem it is very, very unlikely from your description.

More likely a connection failure on one or more of the injectors, or even a problem with a connection to the PTU ,Cas unit or Afm all of these would require is a clean and a squirt of WD40, suppose at worse cas the PTU may be playing up but would go for the aforementioned first. If you need any help with locating the said parts call me and will guide you through.

Thanks so much Jeff.. going to raid the service manual tonight and locate all the bits you mentioned, then most likely you'll get a call from me tomorrow about that PTU!!

Only other thing I'm nervous of is Oil.. the car is cold, but my oil reading it is pretty high on the dipstick, and the oil's not too healthy a colour.. verging on the very darkbrown black side!!!!

Should I be worried about that, could it be linked? or still likely PTU?

(do I sound like a desperate man yet?!? because I bloody well am!!)

If the oil is black then it's doing it's job.

Your prob is almost certainly electrical, so don't panic too much yet.

I noticed when one of my cylinders was not firing, the car felt like it was gonna shake its self apart. So that is most proabably the vibrations.

Hello Nix,

Check all the coilpacks, mine did the same and that's what it was. The connectors break and then they work loose.

Good luck,

Vijay

That's exactly what it's like.. feels like the car's shaking itself to bits.. vibrations are really bad.

Was that problem with the cylinder not firing electrical as well?

Yeah....each plug has its own coil...and the connections on these can corrode. It's like Vijay said....I'd be very surprised if that isn't the cause. I had a similar problem....just needed to clean them up.

I'm just down the road from you....if you need a hand I may be able to help.

  • 2 weeks later...

Think I could do with some help on this one, removed the injector coils, don't really know what I'm looking for... and I'm starting to wonder if this might be exhaust? Sounds like it's blowing?

Anybody near northampton who could spare me an afternoon anytime would be greatly greatly appreciated..

help!!

once again 07740 092550!!
