Red Lever?

Can anyone tell me what the red lever in front of the auto gear selecter is for on my jap import 2 door 300zx ?

    It's basically a safety lock - it's supposed to prevent the box from being knocked into gear when the engine is off. To move out of 'Park' whne the engine is off you need to push the little red lever downwards.
