Hi Guys

I'm going to see a '92 J spec ZXTT Manual for sale tomorrow which has done 110,000 miles. Is the engine likely to be close to the end of its life? When do the big ends normally fail?

Not a huge amount for the engine as such but a fairly high number for the turbos if they haven't been replaced already.

Obviously this will depend greatly on how it's been driven and serviced.

I bought mine more than 2 years ago with more than that. You have to look closely at the car and history if it has any. a good one properly serviced would hopefully make 200000 miles.

 

You probably should pay more attention to the turbos, the suspension and the interior to see what you are getting.

 

Someone with a heavy foot and no mechanical nous can roger the turbos in less than 60K. A sympathetic hard driver can make em last 150K +and counting.

 

In my 2 years and 20000plus miles added it needed front discs, a re - build on the front calipers, prop centre bearing, rear shocks and a battery. I reckon thats not too bad for what you get in return.

 

It already had new front shocks, upper links, rear HICAS arms, new SS exhaust and new discs all round but the fronts warped.

 

Incidentally my 240Z from years ago was all rotting away but the engine could have gone on forever. I hope this one's the same - except not having it rot away as well I mean!

Another thing to check would be the clutch. Has that ever been replaced or is it the original?

An original clutch at 110k miles would be a good sign all right! Some welly merchants toast them in 30k or less. But you'd need one soon I would think unless there was a recent change.

 

Check tension rod bushes too - dripping goo means they are over but not dear to fix with poly bushes for £50 and some spanner and vice work.

Saw the car today. Bodywork was good apart from a small amount of rust on the front right suspension strut.

However, hardly any service history, boost gauge was disconnected, very stiff 1st and 2nd gear change (not helped by a short shifter) and a small amount of white residue under the oil filler cap (admittedly it had been standing for a month). The white residue did vanish however after the test drive.

Sounds as though it has been poorly maintained. Unless it was really really cheap I would walk.

Disconnected turbo gauge sounds a little suspect to me. Its only a small hose you put on, so there is no reason to disconnect it.

I have 102K's on mine. Its just been into Nissan at Winchester for a major service and tune/inspection. Nothing has needed to be replaced other than a front nearside wheel bearing. Only problem with mine was the hub that holds the bearing is alloy and the bearing race is steel. Both (over the years) had corroded together and if it wasnt for the skill of the mechanic taking it all apart it would have damaged the hub. All ok now, but im buying some seconhand hubs from Andy just in case this problem rears up again.

 

Prop centre bearing is ok, engine is ok as are turbos....everything else seems fine and dandy. I do want a working clock though...lol
