Unfortunately my 1997 Z32 TT has developed the annoying top end knock I have read countless articles about.There appears to be large difference of opinion about the noise.It seems to come from the top left hand inlet cam.And it would seem the variable cam pulley needs a new spring does anyone know where I can buy heavy duty springs and do they really cure the problem if not does anyone have a pair of good inlet cam pulleys they would like to sell

Does the rattle disappear after increasing the revs?

Welcome to the club Richard hope you get it sorted.

Yes the rattle seems to go away in the higher rev range but hard to be certain the rattle is probably at its worst around 2000 to 3000 RPM and thank you Gary for the welcome

VVT timing cuts in about 3500rpm some as high as 5k revs, but does depend if the ecu is chipped and the vvt time on/off has been changed. The vvt is off at idle and below that figure, so you may get a spring rattle at the front top of the intake cam. The springs are quite cheap and available from Mike at MJP a trader here and there is a write up in the tech section iirc to change them.

 

Other issue maybe oil starvation to that head, when was the oil changed? should be every 3k miles as the VG engine has a small oil capacity compared to alot of cars and the oil can clog up causing blockages in the oil ways/lifters and cause cam wear.

 

Try and get a video up of the noise, i know it can be difficult to pinpoint, but its a start.
