Hi,

A friend of mine has installed a HKS EVC4 boost controller in my Z. I have 2 questions :

1) In the HKS installation instructions, it does not say anything about disconnecting the stock solenoids, but on some web sites, they say to disconnect them. HKS say disconnect them if you are 'underboosting'. What should I do ?

2) The HKS EVC4 has a switch on the back labelled SW and PO. HKS say 'SW' is for a single port, swing valve or internal type wastegate and 'PO' is for a dual port, poppet or external type wastegate. What should I set mine to ?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I think this is how it is. Can someone who has installed a boost controller please confirm this!

The stock solenoids are there to fool the mechanical wastegate as you probably already know. A second set of solenoids (boost contoller) would act to fool the stock solenoid which in turn fools the wastegate. Just like installing boost jets but in this case adjustable. I would only remove the stock solenoids if they were faultly, also removing them will remove safety boost if any knocking occurs. You could over compensate with the controler though - not recommended!). Timing will still be retarded as normal in safety mode.

HKS telling you to remove the stock solenoids if you are underboosting is not valid. The problem could lie else where like faulty wastegates, boost leak etc.

Hope this helps,

Andy.

It doesn't make any difference if you disconnect the stock solenoids or not assuming that the actuator hoses have been re-routed to the HKS solenoid and the hoses to the stock solenoids have been capped.

The Z does not have external wastegates so I would set your evc to SW.

Steve
