A couple problems

I have a few problems had to keep my car parked at work for a week due to having no brakes.

Basically what happened is when i bought the car the brakes were hardly there drove home at 60mph took me a while as it was 300mile trip one way :)

i was advised when i bought the car that it needs new brake discs which i was supplied by the seller, it obviously needed new pads. when i took it apart i realised that inner brake pad had still half of it there so tried to push the pistons. no chance. So ordered reconditioned 30mm aluminium brake calipers from brakeparts.co.uk but the brake pad pins does not fit they are too short which surprised me as the ones on the car was iron which is a surprise as well the car is 1990 so i was mislead by internet that impreza calipers are the same so ordered pins for that 10pound wasted two days waiting to find out they are even shorter, so bit the bullet went to the dealer 5pound a pin so its not that bad, so after 3 days the pins arrive and they are too short they are 110mm but the only other pins are like 96mm suitable for 26mm disc calipers. Eventually i got it sorted for 1 pound bought a bolt long enough with thread just at the end and stuck a locking nut at the end. now to the problem, the bolt has no movement as i tightened it properly, but there is a CLUNK sound every time i press brakes, i do understand that pads have some movement but the sound worries me. to be honest i have never measured the diameter of the bolt and the original pin so i can not guarantee i have got the right size but they did look similar. Any ideas? Is this normal?

Second is i get blue smoke from exhaust. It had a new engine and turbos 1000miles ago. Story behind it is that it had blown turbos and the last owner drove it a couple hundred miles with a huge blue cloud behind him. I do understand that exhaust got contaminated and there is oil to burn away. how long can it take. it only happens on odd occasions as well. When i go flat out and when i drive at fully warmed engine let the accelerator, coast in a gear for a couple seconds and then touch accelerator then it puffs a bit of blue smoke. Any ideas on this?

Any help would be appreciated

I am not trying to scare you, but I don't think it will be just, oil in the exhaust, pretty sure it is grey/white if you just "fry" oil, it is blue when it is combusted. A lot of tuned up cars cough black as you lift off, might be just the way it is.

that is what scares me, but i can see a lot of people put a lot of trust in dent lee but last owner nathan suggested me that it was doing that since it was rebuilt. i hope that i am not the unlucky one

blocked pcv valves can cause smoke try them first its a simple fix if your lucky

Ok i had a look at them they obviously dont look new. One is leaking oil so that would mean i need a new one?

yes replace both of them at the same time and see if that stops the smoke. think there cheap to buy

There shouldn't be any blue smoke coming from the exhausts on a new engine after 1000 miles. How new is "new"?

Regardless of new or not ... check pcv .. but

blue smoke normally burnt oil ... ie what's going though the combustion cycle ..

White/light blue is after combustion ie from turbo seal

Pure white with sweet or acidy taste/smell is head gasket generally

Best cheapest place to get pcv valves.or shall i just take out and wash out with petrol and blow out with air.or not a good idea

No it's a fair comment, it's mearly a non return valve. Clean and check for proper operation. From my understanding failed PCV will usually result in pools of oil in the plenum. Seems crazy the engine was rebuilt and that token part wasn't replaced. :s

I'd give Lee a phone, he'll be able to give you some advice on it & also tell you what the previous owner asked him to do. When he fitted my engine he advised me to replace as many pipes & hoses as possible. If the previous owner was on a tight budget he might not have followed lees advise. There's always a risk when fitting a second hand engine, especially if you havnt heard it running.

Is it a new engine (as in rebuilt), or just a different engine from another car? Were the turbos rebuilt, or are they second hand along with the engine?

If the PCV system is the issue (fingers crossed), it can be removed fairly easily. It is there mainly for emissions purposes, recycling blow-by gases into the intake under vacuum. Never been an advocate of having anything other than fresh air getting into an engine's combustion chambers, hence I removed mine a long time ago. Probably why my old stock lump is still going strong after 1.5+ bar for so long. Venting to atmos (or a catch can) also results in more crank ventilation under load. Bad for the environment, great for the engine....

The PCV valves shouldn't be leaking oil, that means there's probably a lot of oil in the inlet manifold. Avoid driving the car hard until you have stopped the engine from ingesting oil, as that's a surefire way of inducing detonation.

First of all though, do a compression test. Gives you an indication of what you're working with. Does it breathe heavily? Any fumes puffing out of the dipstick tube? Check the intercooler pipework for oil, could be a turbo issue.
