Hi all,

I am looking for a second car to take on trackdays, tinker with and generally waste money on ;)

I was originally looking at a Scooby, but there was an article in Evo last month that mentioned the ZX TT as an ideal car, and I should be able to get one for £4-£5k ? So now I'm interested :)

What sort of running costs are there? Looking through some past posts, they look like they could be quite high! What sort of opportunity is there to mod the engine? And finally, what sort of insurance cost is it likely to be, given that I'm 22 (with lots of NCB) and using it for limited miles as a second car?

Thanks!

John

Sounds like a Zed, then :D

No but seriously, folks, I reckon if you're looking for a track day tool, whatever you get will need more dosh spent on upgrades, maintenance than a non-track day car.

If you like the RWD experience, then you'll have to go a long way to beat the Z. Lurk through here and there are a lot of threads on insurance, running costs and so on.

Another site with buyers guides and excellent all-round info is http://www.300zx.org.uk

Also make sure to come to a meet if there's one you can get to - you'll see a good selection of cars and members (ooer) and in any gathering of n forum members you will always find n+1 opinions! lol

Right. Im confused? Which car is going to be your track day car? The Z?

Yeah :) but not just a "track day car" a car that I can work on, mess about with and generally have as a project.

But it will be a second car.

Cheers

John

Ahhh. Got ya.!

Good thing about them now you can get classic insurance on the older ones leaving you NCB free to be used on a daily driver.

Performance is very good, but modifications can get espensive. You can put exhaust, air filter and chip it, but after that cost start to go up. :(

Now, I've done a few track days, some in the Zed and I would say it's excellent fun.

But, you will not get the sort of performance 'out of the box' to rival a Lotus 7 or Elise.

I love the Zed, but in essence it is a GT, and in many ways better suited to effortless mile eating than track use.

Having said that with the right modifications an excellent track car can be produced.

I guess the point I am making is you will perhaps need to spend some money to get a good track day ride. Oh, and the Zed likes to be driven - long stints in the garage don't seem to benefit these cars.

Tim

Yeah, I understand it's not a car that is 100% a trackday machine.

I just like the look, would enjoy owning and modding it (slightly). £4k-£5k gets you a lot of car for the money it seems! It would be a weekend car, I suppose.
