What does a fuel dampener do?

Following a service last week, Jeff advised me that the fuel dampener was fualty. Wnet to our new Nissan garage yesterday and ordered said part, expensive for something so small. Just curious, what does it do. Could it's failure be causing problems with the car not starting well?

Stops your fuel drying out !

I believe it's purpose is to smooth out the pulses which the fuel pump gives. The quantity of fuel delivered is calculated by the amount of time the injector is open and the quantity of fuel which the injector supplies per second. The fuel pump actually pumps in pulses and without the dampener, the amount of fuel delivered per injector opening would be unpredictable.

Not sure I've explained that very well. Someone else could do better I'm sure.

Hi Brent, yes Hairsy is bang on, your damper has a slight amount of petrol seeping through the diaphram and immerging at the vacuum line attachment, it would certainly cause odd running albeit maybe intermittently.

Well, at least buying the new one sounds like the right thing to do. Cheers for the buying advice Jay, read everybodies posts about how much you can save but it was just one of those must do weekends, possesed by the handy man bug. Jeff, still have the starting problem, not as bad, but not good. Have spent the last two days cleaning the sensor, but have concluded that the plug on the hanrness is beyond saving and needs replacing. I need to source the plug and get it fitted. Is this something you can do, might just as well change the sensor at the same time. Good news day, stopped the stereo cutting out at high volume, re-earthed it to what must have been the original point. Bad news day, again, the aerial goes up as soon as the stereo is turned on, even CD. This didnt happen before.
