Ok folks...

I have a rumbling noise eminating from underneath the car from about 40ish mph up to the ton. Noise doesnt seem to be gearbox cos it doesnt change pitch when I change gear. If anyone has ever driven a car with a very noisy wheel bearing it sounds not dissimilar to that except its a lot louder and vibrates more.

Also, if this has any bearing on it, it seems to get louder going round a right hand corner...weird I know but true. Ive been told gearboxes on the Zed are bullet proof to a certain extent. Mines a manual 5sp version..and like I said earlier it doesnt seem to be box related. Could this be a CV joint or similar?...or is it really the prop centre bearing or rear gearbox mounting.

If any of the later does anywhere know where to get one done.?

I have just contacted Nissan and they quoted £229+the dreaded to change the centre bearing and supply it. Also anyone any ideas on prices for the mounting?

Is this an easy job to do? nissan reckon they need to drop the exhaust out to do the jobs.

I also have a noise like a moaning (should know what this sounds like if you post on here!!!!) when going around right hand corners, THINK IT'S THE WHEEL BEARING

Are the rear wheel bearings inborad and outborad like the Supras' are?...I mean there is a bearing on the end of the hun and one that supports the inner CV joint at the diff?

If they are like this and its the inboard one...they are a barsteward to do as on the supras'...normally diff out job.

If they are all taper seat type bearings then no probs there....lol

Christ!!!....type fast sod the spelling..lol....I mean INBOARD and OUTBOARD..

Does sound like a wheel hub bearing if it changes tone on cornering. Probably not inboard.

On other cars I noticed they could moan for ages before they really start to fail - then you get play at the wheel where the problem is. On my 240Z I remember it was even resulting in more brake pedal travel as the play in the bearing coggled the disc and pushed the pads back on cornering. Then you could pump it back up again.

You should jack up and spin each wheel and feel for roughness or play.

Cheers mate...any idea how much bearing kits are for the Zed...It must be a rear bearing to be making a change in pitch under cornering?...certainly sounds like rear anyway. Are they taper type bearings?...as in punch out the race from the hub and then insert new bearings...

S'pose could be the centre bearing still. When the rubber support ring gets perished and breaks up you could get support one side and none the other meaning the bearing makes hard contact with the mount during cornering to the right.

Mine was sagging onto the hard mount.

Yeah this is what ive heard just had a quote to do the bearing £304 inclusive....hoping its not the prop....ill check the wheel bearings and then the prop...ar the u/j's at each end replaceable??

Yes they are but not by Nissan - they will tell you that they are non rebuildable. You will need to go to a place like RecoProp, who I think live in Luton.

Thats EXACTLY what they told me...non rebuildable...they wanted over 600 quid for a new prop. Robbing gits.

ill keep you posted as to my findings...im hoping it is just a wheel bearing...but ive never know a bearing to create so much vibration and noise.

Chris

Sorry no idea on wheel bearing costs. Rear outboard look like double ball race press in types. Front are taper roller double race assemblies also press in. Not like the old kind where you lift out the roller cage and knock out the outer track!

Your vibes sounds more like prop - Hope your UJs are OK

Well just lacked up car....rear n/s has loads of play! would this cause vibes through rear subframe assembly? When I say play I can move it about 1/4" top to bottom.

Chris

If you find the problem is a wheel bearing, then I can supply you with a complete hub, including the wheel bearing for £25 (guarenteed). I also have a centre bearing from an autobox propshaft for £50 (includes part of the propshaft aswell)

Thanks

Andy Im assuming that at that price its a second hand hub assembly? Just got a quote for a brand new bearing kit with the flange for 68 quid.
