and no its not the dilema that nelly and kelly have got...

im afraid this is a classic case of following your heart or head.

i drive 80 odd miles a day to work every day so this rules the zed out as a daily driver.

at present im skint, im on the bones of my arse, although the wench has not long moved in and hopefully my financial status should show an improvement ie due to her paying some bills.

due to the mileage i drive ive bought a shit heap, £195 quid from local auction h reg rover 214si, i plan on binning it when the mot runs out, or sticking it back in the auction just before and getting what i can

i think the head gasket has gone on it, but it still runs aslong as i keep topping it up with water and gives pretty good mpg, infact very good.

i dont know whether to keep buying shit heaps and running them into the ground, or sell the zed and buy a focus diesel (only just brought myself to type that), or save for a bit (if i can) and get a not so shit shit heap ie a corsa diesel ( around £1300) and keep the zed

The downside is i keep the zed, i will spend every available bit of cash on wheels, spoilers, go faster bits etc etc and no doubt lose a fortune and the the ****er will probably blow up costing even more wonga

infact fvck it i'll post a poll!!!!

major bummer is that everytime i get in my car it makes me grin

:D

keep it or flog it??? 18 members have voted

      12
    • sell the zed, buy a focus diesel, be unhappy, lose cash in depreciation but probably save cash in long run due to zed not blowing up and become a miserable old tw@t (even more so)

Theres your answer!

ive tried going down the road of just having just one sensible car and it doesnt work. You keep gettin annoyed when some saxo boy blasts past you and find yourself constantly looking on the auto trader website.

You should be able to get yourself a quite respectable little diesel if your thinkin of spending around £1500 so i would go for that.

Paul

I was planning on getting a diesel run around before I had all the hastle with my clutch and other things.

Not as bad as you though because I only do about 150 miles a week.

There are other options for diesels. How about an Escort diesel going for about £500 to £1000, Metro 1.5 are supposed to be good and have a lower tax bracket.

Some one bought a banger to run into the ground in our street as a inbetween car, 2 years on he is still driving it. It only cost him £300 and hes happy with it and not give him any trouble.

My point really is, look round the private ads, cos there are cars on there going cheap which will do very nicely and will last a good few more years.

Why not just get the Rover fixed? If its just the head gasket. I cant comment on the rest of the car, but if its just the gasket then get it fixed. If you are looking for a £1300 Corsa you may get one and it gives you nothing but trouble.

Keep it Scoops;)

Buy a second car that is A1.If you are as Skint as you say,you will never be able to replace all that power;)

Why not keep the Zed and not throw wonga at it? You've still got a beautiful motor with more power than 99% of other cars on the road, still got the grin factor.

But no added risks of blow-ups, time off road in bodyshop, empty wallet etc etc.

And then when you're rolling in it, you've still got a Zed to start throwing money at it - and even better, you know all its recent history, bills etc. Much better than buying another one :)

The absence of desire is nirvana.

My first Z I used to use as a daily driver, clocking up about 110 miles a day. I kept telling myself I'd just tootle along at 65 to save the fuel but I never did. Obce you start winding up to overtake you just can't stop!! Needless to say she financially crippled me and I had to let go.

I now have a new Z I keep for the weekends and run a POS (piece of shit) in the week. 1988 309 diesel, cost £300 quid to buy and is happy as larry running on Asda's finest cooking oil!! (Allegedly!!)

Plus, the car is 'owned' by on of my mates so I can use my z insurance to drive it on 3rd party insurance.

:)

I think sooner or later everyone ends up doing the same if they drive a lot of miles..

After I've moved house I'll be driving 50-60 miles each day instead of 20, so the plan here is to get about a grands worth of Escort/Astra/etc diesel estate, and use that as a runaround - and handy for carrying all the things that you have no hope of fitting into a Z..

Scoops, I keep having this same discussion in my head whenever the beast is in the garage and they lend me a Micra. I'm driving my 75 miles a day to/from work and the Micra uses soooo much less petrol than the Z. Trouble is I hate being passed by anyone so the Micra makes me very very miserable. So in the end I get the Z back and I'm happy again, well until it breaksdown again. I don't have the strength of mind to sell it and get a little sportscar, MX5, which would be cheaper to run and would at least keep me in a "sportscar", so Z bankruptcy awaits me someday on the horizon and then it will be taken away with me kicking and screaming and sulking until I die! I think anyone who runs a daily driver is a very sensible person, I just wish I could be but I love/hate the Z too much to drive anything else willingly.

I've got a Pug 206 1.9 DTurbo and it's pretty nippy and does about 50 to the gallon.

I was using my Z as a daily driver and after looking at my petrol receipts one month and finding I'd spent £600 I went out and got the Pug on contract hire.

£14K car costs me £280 a month inc insurance but I'm spending less than £150 on diesel!

At the end of the contract next year I might keep it as it's a great little car. Then I'm really saving.

Means I've got a 2nd car with porper back seats/boot plus less wear on my Z so less bills and it'll be with me longer.

Just got a me a 1.1 Mk3 Fiesta as a runaround, didn't want to do it but the Z is soooo expensive to run. I only do around 130 miles a week but I spend £35 in petrol.

Yep I'm back in the 1.6 Fiesta, it means I spend £20 a week in petrol rather than £20 per day! The only problem is people mistake it for a Skyline and try to race me!!

I have just had to buy a second car, used the zed for a daily runner for a year and a half, but more than the petrol costs she has been off the road too many times now and i need a car.

When I get her back I will be keeping the daily runner (a pug 405 1.6 - cost £300) and using the zed for summer eves and weekends. Of course not forgetting track days.

Cheers

Martin

I'd say keep the Z if you really can afford it - it's not worth a lot but is one hell of a car. To keep it more reliable, keep it stock. Drive it once a week. Gotta be worth a try - then after a few weeks/months reconsider your situation.

You will have more money for cars if you drink less, as I think you have a bit of a drink problem !;) :D

Why not buy an S13 200SX - excellent cars, 30 mpg, look nice, easier to mend. You can get one for less than £2000 - ask Mrs Turbo !

OR.....my Dad is selling an Escort - ONLY 26k miles, 1997, 1.6 petrol, Zetec, 5-speed Manual, FSH E/W PS, etc. etc. Owned FROM NEW by my Dad, so no abuse/hidden history. He is asking £3,000 ONO, and it will be available 1/1/2003.
