Here's a bunch of reasons why you shouldn't drive MR2's into concrete lamp posts

In case you're interested it is (was) a MkI supercharger model that I think was only intended for the US market.

Forget the car, but can I have the girl?

I'll say one thing about having the engine in the back - I don't know how hard it contacted the concrete post, but it hasn't encroached into the cabin area by the look of it... If the engine was there, you could wave byebye to the use of your legs..

Hmmm, her name is Lauren I believe, one of the IMOC clan.

She can drive too, but this time it was about 50mph into a lampost, dunno what happened exactly ...

I imagine the lamppost leapt out into the road in front of her ;)

Still, 50mph, I should think the distortion of the front of the car took a large proportion of the energy from the impact - which is rather good, really..

Well, not good for the health of the car, but the occupant(s)

Well you could say that Aaron but the reason it could have collapsed like thats is there is nothing behing that part of the car. Its empty. However if there was half of a tonne engine there, it would of hit it and stopped.

Which is EXACTLY what the designers are trying to prevent - hence crumple zones. The idea is to slow the car down at a controlled rate by using the crumple zones - this has worked perfectly in the pics. If the car comes to a sudden halt then your internall organs will take the bashing=not good..

CheerZ,

Most modern cars collapse like that, even when there is an engine at the front.

I believe they design things like propshafts, engine mounts and most things around the passnger compartment to collapse/get out of the way. This absorbs the energy of the impact and hopefully leaves the passengers relatively unscathed!

Engines are designed to drop on inpact. I was in a very serious accident about 10 years ago in an Escort Convertable on the M1 motorway. We ended up hitting a coach. The engine accutally dropped and went back. So the engine ended up under the drivers and passengers feet. Worked perfectly.

I wouldnt call that part of the MR2 a crumple zone. I dont believe that the design was to allow the impace to ge that far up. The only thing stopping the post splitting the car in 2 was the front structial member going across the front of the car. If that snapped, the car would have ended up a 1 seater. However the pressure on that part of the car because it was a small impact zone would have been huge, and shows how amazing the chassis really is.

The only people who could tell if the car was designed to crumple like that would be the designers.

To me it looks like a crumple zone because the car has absorbed the impact and left the passenger compartment intact.

Also cars of that age were designed to pass front impact tests.

She is indeed lucky, as a generalisation, when other cars hit each other they both cushion the blow via their crumple zones and also move to absorb the impact, touchwood.

When they hit lamposts and trees, they don't move and so the car and occupants absorb all the impact!

It's going to take more than the bottle of fairy liquid on the roof to clean that up! LMFAO

Looks like she was starting a nice cone collection under the car there...

Picture 6 .......... things never seem so bad when you got a cup of tea and a spliff!:D  :D

at least she was ok :)
