Not really zed related but a shock indeed today had a flyer come from my wholesalers and 200 boxed sets of H4 headlamp bulbs available for £116, that`s .58 pence each. My daughter recently (with out me knowing) purchased the same said bulb from Harry Halfords for her Fiesta...wait for it £7:99 each!!!

On a boxed set of 200 costing £116 their mark up is £1,484 on just 200 bulbs..wow! and they probably pay less than that for them anyway..no wonder they have nice showrooms

Just in favour of Halfords, bought a headlamp unit for the Misses' MX5 today for £6.99 - not a bulb - a sealed-beam headlamp !

Well impressed !

Edited 'cause I didn't read Jeff's posting correctly.

I bought some of the high powered lights for mine. The ones that say they are 30% brighter cos I am desperate to get the lights to actually light something up.

They cost me £9 I think each.

Do these lights actually work, are they any brighter?

If so I'll have to pop down to Halfords and get some.

Anything brighter would be a bonus during these dark times!

There is a difference. But I think most of it was the position of the lights. I have them shinining mostly up now. May fail its MOT but at least I can see slightly better.

Funny cos I gave my friend a lift back in my car down some country roads with very few lights. he then realised how bad they where. :(

Any idea about HID people? Will they make a difference? Any one got them installed?

I was thinking about some fogs on it somewhere. I am the first to complain when I see people with fogs on when they shouldnt but I think we really need them.

Stuart

Strange you should talk about Z bulbs. Just gone to harry's and bought some 130w jobbies!!

£4.99 each. So £10 to be able to see a lot better is quite worthwhile really........

Robert.

I couldnt find any higher wattage lights. The ones I got are the 55w Bosh ones. They say they are 33% brighter. I really need some better lights. :(

Yeah there are a growing number of rip off merchants around just waiting to take your hard earned money off you..... Shame really, there are some people who can justify their prices, others, well, see above lol....

CheerZ,

I thought you couldn't get Z headlight buls from halfords !

My mechanic says they cost about £15 a bulb !!

Is he trying to rip me off ?

UK spec Gio

Then I guess you'd be fine getting them from Harry - they're the standard H3 (i.e. not the H3C which has the extra connector).

Or if you want better lighting try http://www.powerbulbs.com

You most definatley can get Z bulbs from harry's. The standard ones are real crap in the dark. These are 130w and really light your way.

If you want the code just let me know and I will post it here.

They are £4.99 each, and are worth every penny.

Hugs and kisses

Watch out for the temperature - I think AndyP did some tests and 100W melted the plastic surround. I've heard that some people drill litte holes to aid airflow but this seems a little M Mouse to me.

Jeff says he doesn't have any problems with 100W bulbs tho.

Also watch out for the voltage drop (which might cause too much current, hence heat in the wiring loom). Mine's got a separate mini wiring doobry to connect the headlights to the battery and the original loom is only uses to trigger a dedicated relay. Hence lots of lovely volts at the bulb.

Cheers - Gio

I just went Halfords and bought some 130W for my car. I will see how much better they are. I am keeping my old 55W as spares cos I hear high wattage bulbs have a habbit of blowing.

Posting my findings with the 130W head lights.

WOW!

I can actually see the roas now. The road infront of me is lit up, lit up so much that I can actually see where I am going. Excelent!!

I hope that they last. £4.99 for halford ones, the Bosch ones I got where £8.99 each.

Stuart

Funnily enough I just fitted two of Leigh's 85W bulbs to my Z on Sunday, to replace the Halfords 'blue' 55W=85W things that were in there before..

They didn't look any brighter to me in the daylight, but at night.. wow!

I have a sneaking suspicion that part of the increase in brightness and range is because they now seat correctly in their mountings rather than the H3's with soldered -ve leads that didn't really mount properly, so the bulb was probably pointing downward or something..

Still, the difference was like (if you'll pardon the pun) night vs. day..

So what bulb is the right one?

I had the ones with the wire coming out of the bottom because that is what I took out of the car when I got it.

Stuart

Don't worry Stuart - you've got the right ones..

UK cars use H3 bulbs (one trailing wire, grounded via the bulb chassis), and Japanese cars use H3C bulbs (two spade terminals directly on the bottom of the body of the bulb, which is cylindrical)..

It's common to muller H3 bulbs to fit where the H3C should go (as I did) by soldering an extra flying lead on the chassis of the bulb, as the Japanese Z didn't earth it's lights via the light housing..

!PHEW!

I was getting worried.

Cos I looked at the spare bulb kits at halfords too and for the Z they said kit 5 but looking at it I could see that the head light bulb was wrong for starters.

Anyway, my next job it to put Helix fogs in where my side lights are. That sould light up my way ;)

Stuart

So another happy Zedder converted to 130w bulbs the Stuart??

LOL do you notice tickover drop when you switch on 260w of driving lamps??

Safe driving chaps!!

Robert.
