Just purchased a kph to mph speedo convertor on Fleabay, to go with a new MPH facia. Apparently it also changes the mileometer to miles, and deresctricts....who is the recognised verifyer of the mileometer(currently in km) reading when this is changed?

Or can it be done as part of the MOT report?

Featured Replies

As far as I know, there wouldn't be any official recognition of the change in odometer reading. An MOT tester would presumably enter the reading as miles unless you told him otherwise.

so....get my calculator out and wind the clock back? is that what everyone else does?

I'm not sure anyone's gonna advocate that, mate!!

There lies the problem...odometer shows in km, and it would be nice to be in miles but not that astronomical amount...

what did others do?

If you wound the odometer back, it wouldn't tally up with previous MOTs...

When Jeff converted mine he issue a certificate to say it had been converted, what the KM reading was at the time of conversion and what the miles tally was once converted.

I believe he marks the back of the speedo cluster with the conversion date too.

Not a legal document but when selling the car on its evidence to the new owner its not been clocked. Again not that's its proof but as you know mileage is hard to prove on second hand cars of this age anyway.

Thanks for that. Not planning to sell anytime soon, but thought that there was some legal mullarkey to go through first. I take it he reset your odometer at the time?

He did

Its only an issue if you have wound back the mileage to up the price of a sale, so committing fraud basically.

You can change the mileage on the odometer to the equivalent in miles, take a pic of the before and after reading with time stamp as proof to any future owner what was done.

As said the MOT tester will only write down what he sees on the odometer and although mileage will look different from previous MOT certificates, this is where the time stamped pic comes in handy to show the change.

So not illegal as long as when you come to sell you are honest
