Hi guys, quick question which I'm pretty sure I know the answer to, do you need a working rear fog light for the mot,

Cheers

Yes, but if you want a temporarily fixed up one can be done, as long as it works and has an illuminated switch in the cabin, so many owners hate the add on ones in the past we had a fog light with long lead with switch and clamp to fit on the rear tie down eye one with the cable through the boot lid, never a problem.

Ok thx Jeff, another one, another zed has a solution that uses the existing light cluster, so no silly add on light. Can that solution be easily transplanted to one without.

Yes you just put in a red 21w bulb into the o/s chamber of your reverse light panel and wire in a cable to your cabin illuminated switch, the other wire needs grounding at the rear.

Just do it at MOT time if you wish, if you prefer two even reverse lights throughout the year.

Cheers, was there a way that included the fog lights part of the main light cluster, ie not the reversing lamps..

Yes a circuit I made up years ago and has featured here and on other forums since, basically a change over relay fitted in to the inner brake light bulbs ( zed has four) so under normal running you have standard four brake lights, when lights are on and fog light switched on the two inner brake lights become fog lights with the two outer brake lights acting as normal, switching the fog light switch off returns it to the standard four brake lights, nice and simple and no added light or weak reverse light red bulb and no way impacts upon teh look of the clusters.

The answer is no, however some sacrifice a stop/tail bulb as each side as two but this ruins the overall look of the tails/brakes .

EDIT: When I put no, I was thinking OEM.

My post Jeff means just that sacrificed, losing tails for good, your relay method is perfect and satisfies the purists to a degree !!

Not too sure on a weak 21w red bulb, this is just the same output as a brake bulb and lets face it, as long as it satisfies a MOT tester then what does a few lumens matter .

Yes all good, the weak reverse light I meant is the red on the bulb is very often very pink looking when on, and get more pink/ white as time goes on, a quick change to a new bulb sorts it though.

Same question , can it be transplanted as a whole to another car

Good to hear your asking mot quesgions, does that mean you cars nearly ready for the road?

Jeff, back to this issue, as th esolution requires some elrctonics, would this be taped up near the bulbs or at the fog light switch, and does transplant mean cut and splice where the cables are clean.

Normally the relay is mounted at the right rear cluster, usually on crimps or scotch locks so should be easy to swap over.

I plan on using the off side reverse light & changing the bulb (for MOT)

Where is the best place to locate the rocker switch on the dash?

Sorry to jump in this thread!

The best place on the Dash?? Where ever you feel most comfortable. Mines next to the Clock (not my choice)

If you use the solution that Jeff suggests, the lights are operated by the existing switch on the right dash pod

Rich

Maybe if I could just mention... on mine the centre rear panel has reversing lights in the top two sections, either side of the 300ZX logo (3 x 3W LEDs = 9W each side) and the fog lights are in the two bottom sections (also 3 x 3W LED each side)

That is pretty easy to do with some plastic dividers and the LEDs plus a few power resistors

I think (IIRC) I did the same on Andy (phutumsch) rear panel?

Because it is done with LEDs you don't really notice any difference externally. But bear in mind 3W LEDs are equivalent of about 30W bulbs so basically as I have three each side in each section I actually have about 180W of reversing light and the same for fogs. Believe me it's pretty noticable when they are on!! :devil2:
