I need to create a Hardstanding for the zed, to give me a good proper space for maintenance, gravel sucks.

As a rough guess 3mx2m would be sufficient to cover a zed foots print? I read I need around 4" depth of concrete or 120mm, that equates to roughly 1m3 of concrete.

I used a calculator and it's telling me i need

250kg concrete

400kg sharp sand

800kg of aggregate

That's a lot of materials for such a small area is it not?

If you mean 250kg of cement then you are not far off. If you can get the ballast delivered loose instead of in bulk bags it'll be a bit cheaper. Get a tonne and 10 bags of cement(250kg) delivered and throw it through a mini mixer. Job done!

Make it a bit bigger and get a price for a cement lorry to pour it in, obviously weigh up the price of materials and tools to do it yourself and consider your back lol

You'll need to have a compacted base of hardcore or type 1 mot (scalpings/planings) beneath the concrete base. And also consider some anti-crack mesh. Use some 4x1, levelled all round to form the area, then fill this with your concrete and tamp it off. Use some thing slightly wider than 2m to tamp it and it'll be spot on.

am a builder. like he said build a form work to the size you need and a good few inches of crush and run and hire a waker and compact it down as much as you can get get spot mix to mix it one site and pour it in in one go them tamp it off if you try mixing that much your self isn't not the way to go

I share your pain with the gravel driveway, I moan at anyone who comes round lol.

Can't wait to move and have a private are for car work with a solid floor!

Bugger. So really if need frame out my area with 4x2 and compact hardcore, then have a premix lorry pour it in....pain in ass, all I want is a concrete Hardstanding lol, not a foundation gotcha super market.

You don't need premix. It's not like you will be knocking it up in a barrow. It'll take an hour or so putting it through a mixer. When are you thinking of doing it? I could come down and give you a hand if I'm free.

put the crush and run down get the waker on it get it compacted level then build the frame on top of it pour the concrete then temp it of if you want it flush with the ground you will need to dig it out first then lay the stone so you mite want to get a skip

get a premix will be a much better job then pissing around mixing it all

Well I've got a project coming up which I'd rather not do on gravel. However time isn't on my side, I wanted to sort it out before japfest but I've got way to much on to add that much extra work into my schedule. Balls. I will have to rethink my options in the sort term.

I will still need the Hardstanding eventually for my car shed.

It'll be easier, that's for sure. But the finished job will be the same. Comes down to budget.

What sort of price is a cubic meter if premix typically?

About £100m3 but you'll probably have to pay for delivery and maybe a part load if you are only having a meter cubed. Phone around.

no no no the pre mix will be a consistent mix all the shame colour will go off dry all the same and last many years longer you can ask for fibres to be throw in it to will make it super strong and will be poured and laying and tamped off in no longer that 20mins

laying them is back breaking work and if you don't know how to do it you will be laying them then lifting them put more gear under them laying it againg trying to get em em level if ye base isn't spot on thay will move ie sink and look uneven as the years go on

plus you will need the same base for the flags as you would the concrete so the flagsd will take a long longer unles you are planning to lay them wit no base I see people do this often and is bad news

Ok, thanks for that guys, Answered a fair few question marks. Back to the drawing board shirt term then.

Just for the record Dan I am not some DIY'er, I am a builder too. I'd be pretty worried if I couldn't knock up a consistent gauge of concrete. If it's varying in colour I really would give up!!

I do however realise that not everyone on here does it for a living.

I wouldn't advocate laying 600x600 slabs either. But to call it back breaking work? It's only a 6m2 area!

premix gear just like premix screed is the way to go. laying flags is hard work mate and for some one that has never done it it will be back breaking

Just for the record im a lazy barsteward and if i can get a machine to make a job easier i will buy it:biggrin: , same comes to my drive when i complete it, Mr cement truck will definitely be delivering it or my back will never forgive me, it keeps threatening every now and again to fold as it is

Don't tell me your drive is in primer too mate..??:lol::lol:
