I'm considering a 2 storey extension to the side of my house up to my boundary. The border I want to extend up to has a public footpath along its length (along the side of the house). Google is a bit of a minefield of information on this so I was wondering if anyone knew the legalities of extending to a boundary like this?

I basically want to know if I can extend right up to the border or whether there is a set dimension that has to be left by law?

You can extend right up to your boundary to the sides. Although each local authority can see the rules in different ways.

You will need to speak to your local planning office and ask their advice.

You will need planning permission for what you want to do though.

I only offer this advice as it's what I have found out in the past few months as I have just got planning permission for a 2 story side extension.

You can go right up to your boundry but has tighter H&S issues regarding fully enclosed scaffold ect while still not affecting public right of way.Get on the right side of your planning officer and all should be smooth..get off on the wrong footing with him or her (excuse the pun) and he,ll make you wish you had,nt started.
