Manual Gear Knob Removal

Hi

 

I am trying to replace my gear knob, it is rubber coated, I have removed everything, gaiter, console etc, but can't seem to get this damn thing off. I have tried pulling, twisting but that twists lower shaft

 

Any ideas how to do it?

    A mate of mine had the same trouble. Got the thing off in the end with a pair of grips but trashed the gear knob itself. Turned out some clown had thread locked it on !
