Rented a little Peugeot partner van from europcar rentals on Monday. It's was a 2012 with 28,000 miles on the clock. It was £78 for 3 days with £1000 excess! If I wanted to reduce the excess to £200 I had to pay another £80. I said no thanks as I'm only doing a few short journeys and it will be parked in a secure car park.

Took it back today and was told that there was slight scuff/ curb marks on the front wheel trims and that they would be taking the £1000 excess of my debit card and once the vehicle had gone to Peugeot to have new ones fitted I would then get the remainder back!

I went fkn ballistic and was close too knocking him out!

I did look at the van before I took it and it didn't have any dents or anything like that,

But I was basically ripped off because i never got down on my hands and knees to within a few inches of the edge of the wheeltrim to see the tiny scuff on the side of it when i picked the vehicle up.

Strangely enough though that is exactly what the staff member did when i returned it!

I then had to go to the local peugeot dealer and spend £75 on a pair of wheel trims as my deposit and excess were on a debit card and i couldnt afford to have all my money taken.

I've since looked online and this seems to be a common tactic with them. They don't point out the damage that they know is there so they can jump on it when you return

Won't be using them again!

Jesus mate..... thats bad..... I won't be using them.... Thieving B******d's..... I would write to their head office and point out that you will never be using them again and recommending friends and work colleagues to do the same....

Might be an idea if anyone has to rent a vehicle to get pictures from all angles before leaving their compound to cover ourselves??

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!

if I was getting ripped like that I wouldn't not be able to stay calm if you did scuff them then you should pay yes but if it really wasn't you then I wouldn't stand for it atall

Thats a rip off mate i hire vans all the time now ive stopped leasing and the excess on any of them is £400, but i check with a fine tooth comb with the guy checking it before i leave with it, but in fairness even their brand new vans have branch scratches down the side and odd marks on most panels lol, its wear and tear of a commercial vehicle.

Seriously, unless you were inches away you could not see the marks and the muck and grime that was on the wheels that had just been washed when I picked it up was on top of the marks? And how can a van with 28000 miles on it have managed to not have been curbed in that time!

There was another women customer in behind me so that was the only reason he didn't get lamped, but I did say that he better hope I never bump into him on a night out.

The thing is they've got your card number and there's not a lot you can do to stop them.

If you do a search on europcar rip offs you will spend the rest of your lives reading them coz there's thousands of posts out there!

u shuda kept the car. paid the excess. reported it missing and sold it for parts.

Wouldn't even be worth a grand!

Wheel trims come under fair wear and tear with most rental companies (especially commercial) so I am surprised they pulled you up on that. I deal with all the rental companies (including Europcar) on a weekly basis too.

Also I must also add that Peugeot Partner Vans do not come with wheel trims as standard, just steel wheels.

Are you sure you didn't just dream this? haha

Europe car screwed me over too a few years ago. Had a 208 rental car in Sardinia. Got the liability waiver thing for extra money. Had someone force me off the road and hit a small boulder which put a little dent in the sill.....ends up that there was some sort of get-out clause (I forget which) and the entire £500 deposit was with held.

If you're booking a car, do it through an agent. I've rented on a number of different continents and have always used carhire3000 who are great and explain fully what your costs are and what you're covered for, in addition, they can supply extra and sometimes often cheaper, coverage that's more beneficial to the minefield of bolt-ons and nonsense you get a the check-out desk of the rental company.
