Wotcher mate - how's it going?

First question - what spec is your car? It was RHD so must have been UK or Japanese.

Second question - (if Japanese) has any modification been done to the speedo - say to convert from kph to mph?

Not that I know anything technical but I am sure the tech gurus would find this helpful.

sorry mate i have a japanese and its rhd.

any help is appreciative

the steering gets heavy each time the speedometer

on my TT goes erattic.. help..

2 things it could be

1 Speed sensor in the gearbox has gone. About £100 for a new onw.

2 The KPH to MPH converter on the dial has gone south. I think they can be repaired if not replace it.

This is most common in JAP cars and 90% of the time it's becuase of the speed converter. Get it checked out if you can. I have no idea where it is or what it looks like cos I have a UK car. But some one can shed some light on what to do

Stuart

If your car is a J zed then it might or might not have a kph > mph converter depending on what previous owners did to it.

What does the speed read - mph or kph? Any stickers? What's the highest figure on the dial?

i keep leaving out vital info..

my speedometer says kph .. no stickers

and highest number is 300khp.

i imported it from japan a 90tt auto, black..

In that case it's 95% associated with the speed sensor on the gearbox.

Or at a slightly longer shot it could be the speedo head - don't forget that some of the speed signals (I think the one to the PAS) actually go via the speedo..

At least I think they do, without checking to make sure..

Having a check here http://www.300zx.org.uk/mod_comp_1.htm it looks as if J clocks should only go up to 180kph.

Therefore if darkman2 has a kph dial up to 300kph I would (non-techily) make two guesses:

1) there's been an aftermarket change (clock face or whole pod) done in Japan

2) this might have included a delimiter

In this case, might there not still be a converter thingy gone u/s?

Mine was suffering the same symtoms but was relating to going over bumpy ground or cornering hard, I checked the positioning of the unit and found it had been fitted "hanging" from the loom under the dash so I cable tied it so it couldn't move or swing around and I have not any further problems with the speedo/steering.

My J clocks go up to 300kph as well - and I'm pretty sure they are aftermarket (have an unusual 'Z' logo in the centre), and not standard fitment - however mine are just Japanese kph clocks, there's no convertor (well there was, it was b*ggering up my steering/auto ECU etc so I unwired it and went back to kph).

HTH.

When my speedo died the steering didnt change. It was all exactly the same but the speedo wasnt showing any speed.

Sounds like speed sensor to me

appreciate all the responses to my speedometer problem

. thanks much you all have given me good adv. ill try a thing

and see how.. will keep in touch..

the darkman give mucho respecto..
