Hi chaps bit of advise from the IT wizards please, having downloaded Zonealarm firewall and configuring etc in the last 20 mins whilst checking the forum out Zonealarm has reported every 2 to 3 mins the message below or very similar ones.

"ZoneAlarm prevented a remote computer from connecting to port 137 on your computer. This connection attempt was probably legitimate network traffic. Port 137 is commonly used by networked Windows computers to enable file sharing and other resource sharing"

What or who is this about???

It is more than likely some infected pc on the internet scanning your pc for "open windows shares" to copy a trojan virus across.

You will get lots of these, i dont use zonealarm but it probably has a log facility where you can view the ip address of the machine probing yours.

Basically ignore it, for more info view http://www.sans.org/newlook/resources/IDFAQ/port_137.htm

Of course I should add if you have unpassword proctected windows shares on your PC you may be in trouble - unlikely unless you have a home network...

Thank Barry, here is some more info what does this mean?

"Zonealarm blocked Internet Access to your computor

[netBIOSName] from 81.76.144.103. [uDP Port 125]"

??????? jeez give me an engine to work on anytime...

Jeff,

I had the same sorts of experiences when I first used Zonealarm. It didn't take long for me to switch off notifications. Been using my latest install about 2 months and I've just checked and it's blocked 6935 hits !

Dave

81.76.144.103 is the IP address of the pc that did the probing,

"netbios" is the old microsoft communications protocol that was commonly used to network windows PC's together...

My network at work gets tonnes of attacks every day, unfortumatly there are plenty of servers running 24/7 that are infected and are constantly probing random ip addresses such as the one given out by your ISP to you when you connect to the internet...

You should be able to turn the warnings off in zonealarm...
