Replaced my front discs & pads (x-drilled Brembos and EBC Greenstuff) on Saturday and now I also want to change the brake fluid. Can someone remind which is the best/most appropriate to use ? i.e. one which doesn't slurp up water, is compatible with the remnants of existing fluid (prob DOT 3) and won't eat the existing seals etc. Is it DOT 5.1 ?

Why not just use stella??? :D Cheaper than brake fluid and you can stop for a drink if you get bored :D

DOT 5.1 is what I use. AY3388 (or whatever ;)) will recomend some other hyper expensive stuff. Either way for road use most fluid will be good enough. Got mine from Harrys I think. TBH I wouldn't bother about mixing with whats in there - you should flush the old fluid out......

HTH

Cheers Andy. I wasn't planning on mixing it as such but there will always be some residue when you put the new stuff in - I just want to make sure that it doesn't react and set like jelly or something !

BTW Could I use Guinness instead ? Stella gives me big headaches ! :D

5.1 is the one which apparently could cause problems.

i use it and have had no hassles whatsoever to date (touch wood)

What about DOT 4.1 which is allegedly compatible with DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 and exceeds both boiling points for 5.1 ?

Deemon Twonks sell it for £28 I can get it for £15;)

This is what they say.....................

Automec's Silicone Brake Fluid repels moisture,so unlike standard polyglycol brake fluid,it never needs changing.

Rust and corrosion are inhibited because moisture is kept out of the system, and the high boiling point of 260c (500f) is maintained throughout the life of the product, ensuring consistent,long-term,safe performance.

Conforms to the highest acknowledged standards, the US Dept of transportation (DOT)5 standard as well as the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 116 and US Military Standard MIL B46176 and has been standard issue in US Military vehicles for over 15 years.

PS Andy you know who uses it on 300s;)

Depends on how much you want to pay.

The best stuff is Castrol SRF, it has by far the highest wet & dry boiling point of any brake fluid period. Next i would suggest ATE super blue , I just not to sure where you can get it over here.

Greenstuff are you sure you want to do that????

Nice low dust, but not very good at stopping the car, especally with a car the weight of a 300.

I'm sure you could get those to fade quite easily.

Err well I went round Harrys and bought Castrol something or other, basically DOT 4.1, Was about £8.50 a litre I think.

As for the Greenstuff, well they were on Warrens recomendation and suplied at a good price by one and the same (!) Anyway, if they turn out to be sh1te then I'll be getting some of the horribly expensive Kevlar jobbies PDQ.

Cheers all

I have just changed from Greenstuff - not beacuse they where naff - but because they lasted about 5 minutes and they aint cheap. So I wont buy them again. Waste of money

I was speaking to Jeff about this the other day who said that Green stuf would last about 3 months on average and even less on vented discs.

So I decided to stick with brembo and kavlar.

That won't be SRF at £8.50.

I used to run Greenstuff. Intial bite was crap, but a litter better with some heat in them. When you get them warm, they carbon up and make the wheels go black anyway. There quite harsh on discs as well as generating a fair amount of heat. A lot of people put those pads down to cracking their discs.

IMO you would be much better of with something like Pagid, Mintex or Ferrods, DS2000 or 2500.

Or give them ago and see what you think.

You're not wrong, it's called Castrol Response and it's £9.49 a litre

Castrol Response Dot 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid. --Exceeds FMUSS-116 Dot 5.1 specification. --Anti-Vapour lock maintains braking response. --Compatible with all Dot 3; 4; & 5 brake fluids

Anyway, whatever it is it's gonna be better than what's in there now. To my knowledge it's been there for 5 years, which probably means it's vintage 1992 !!!!

Oh right. This must be why my nice new grooved discs are blue and cracked after about a month.
