Speedo problem

If anyone can give me some advice on this before I go and spend large amounts of cash I haven't got I would be very grateful.

I run a standard UK 1991 TT (auto). The speedo works when it feels like it. All other instruments work fine. The rev counter works smoothly and the mileometer/trip work fine. The speedo normally works when it is raining, on dry days usually nothing. If it reads nothing and you floor it-( say 80mph for arguments sake), it will go straight up to 80 mph and then drop down to zero regardless of what speed you are doing. I have had it flip over and come to a rest at max (190 on clock), then a couple of days later it flipped back to zero. When it is working it usually is flicker free and moves smoothly as speed increases.

If the worse is the case and the speedo head needs replacing any advice would be useful. New from Nissan I understand approx £400. From courtesy your looking at £250 delivered although I have been told it doesn't work directly with the UK setup. Should I source one second hand are they the same in turbo/non turbo and also manual/automatic.

A speedo is very useful in this car!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many thanks for any advice.

I had this problem on mine.

Is it a UK car? Or Jap?

This problem occurs when either the speed sensor or speed converter (kph/mph) plays up. But the steering goes all funny.

On mine it was just the dial that went. Some times working other times I would be doing 80 and it shoed 0. And then the dial suddenly decided to work and then almost striaght away stop working, it would shoot accross to the other side. And if it then decided to start working again while on the otherside would work backwards:confused:

Anyway. If its the dial, you can try taking the dial pod out and resolder the connections on the back of the dash and on the dial its self. I know some one people in the states have this trouble and most of the time resoldering it works.

If not you can try to just buy the speedo but I dont know many people who are willing to split a dial pod up, so you may have to get the whole thing. I got a 2nd hand one for £125 from another UK Z. There is a difference with in the back of the dash for the connectors from a Series I and Series II dash. I have a Series I Z and got a Series II dash. I was a little peeved. However I took the dash pod apart and swapped the dials over. This then gave me the advantage of keeping the original odometre. Every thing is working fine now.

Nissan quoted me £380+VAT I think it was for a new dial pod, and a US one only goes up to 160mph but I dont think that would be a problem. Ask AndyZ or any of the other people who are breaking a Z.

Another thing. If you put a UK MPH dial in a Jap car, the dial will work in MPH, if you have a UK car and put a JAP dial in it, it will work in KPH.

I've got a complete UK speedo cluster. Its a series 1 car. £150 if you're interested.

Thanks
