Ive read a few articles on here regarding the centre bearing for prop and rear gearbox mounts causing a rumbling noise. I have this problem with mine and was wondering if the centre bearing is a Nissan only part and that of the rear mount.

I thought the noise was eminating from the gearbox itself, but Ive been told by loads of owners now that the 5sp manual box is pretty much bullet proof. The car is a UK 1990 model and is approaching 100,00 miles. Oil has been changed religiously every 3000 miles so no probs with engine...although it does tend to idle a bit rough sometimes. Anyone any ideas on that?

Anyone any ideas on cost for the parts I need and where is best to get them from...I hate paying Nissan prices!!

http://www.courtesyparts.com - the ONLY place to get nissan parts if you want anything more than a washer LOL Yeah they're in the states BUT they can get you the bits QUICKER and CHEAPER even after shipping and duty. The reason? This island is a fvcking rip off :(

Part numbers? I'll be back ;)

Will the parts be the same as UK spec?....I was going to order my shockers from these people but the bloke I spoke to couldnt guarantee the parts would be the same

You really have to get under and inspect it or better still get it on a lift. Mine had the rubber of the bearing mount all hard and perished. You could see the cracking by gently jacking the prop up to stretch the rubber. The shaft was otherwise running on the bones of its arse so to speak. The vib tends to go away as it warms up and the rubber gets a little softer.

Be careful that the rumbling is not proposhaft universal joints as that would be a bit more expensive to fix. Nissan UK relieved me of about £135 for the centre bearing and my local garage took 3 labour hours to fit it. You need massive torque to undo the big nut to split the propshaft.

Incidentally the old bearing was perfect - only the rubber part was finished.

You can check out your bearbox mounts at the same time.

Cheers mate.

Ill get it up to a mate with a hi lift ramp. The vibes dont tend to go away. It sort of starts at about 35ish mph through to about 70. After 70 its still noticeable but not as much. I was worried it was going to be a gearbox re-con. I said to Nissan the other day about prop u/j's but they said that they are non serviceable items. They tried to get me to part with nearly 600 whole english pounds for a new prop. I told them to get stuffed. lol

Is it true what I have heard that the gearboxes are pretty much bullet proof then?

Yep - the gearboxes are fantastic - well the manual ones are LOL!!!

It ISN'T the UJ that has gone - it is the centre support bearing... Not the easiest job in the world either - the torque on the retaining nut is awesome...

Chers folks, I think I may have diagnosed the problem then. Cheers Andy...by the way whats the torque setting for the centre nut?... I have a torque wrench that I use on trucks...It goes to 500 Nm...That should be plenty ....yes?

PS: Did my cheque arrive for the switches?

Chris

OOOOOps...lol...wrong Andy....Scrap the last bit of last message..lol

just a quick note about Courtesy Nissan...... needed some new wheels nuts, £10.00 EACH from UK!!!!!!!!! $1.50 from Courtesy, can you believe it?????

Anyway, ordered them wednesday-got them this morning!

How good is that?

Maybe also worth asking around before you place the order - that way if anyone else wants anything they pay some of your shipping ;) Make sure you get the money first though ;) LOL

Andy

Oh and a torque wrench for trucks will be just the ticket ;) I'll look up the torque when I get home for you unless someone beats me to it ;) Do you want a copy (cough cough) of the service manual???

Yeah,

I was thinking about getting one of these CD Rom jobbies with the manual on it. Can print off the pages with out the manual getting dirty under the bonnet....lol....

If any one has the Nm or ft/lb settings of torque for this centre bolt please let me know. Also can anyone place any light on that idling prob I have with the car?

Thanks

Chris

I had the erratic idle also. Cleaned throttle bodies, reset tickover with the idle valve ecu connection disconnected etc. Mostly it ticksover now at about the set 700rpm steady and bang on. But just occasionally it takes a wobbly and ticksover highish. I pop the bonnet, and I find that giving the throttle position sensor connection a waggle or the connections to the wires just under it on a flying lead connection. This usually does the trick and it comes back down again.

I think Z connectors are permanently becoming oxidised.

The wiring gets brittle too so you gotta watch how you waggle!

If you ignore the fact that they eat the synchros ! ;)

Cheers peeps!

perhaps its the throttle body that needs a clean then. Ill give that a try. Anyone recommend a good solvent/cleaner to use?

Chris

I use brake cleaner, seems to work fine. Carb cleaner would also do and even WD40 at a push.

Ok ill give that a go...anything I need to watch out for?...

Chris

Torque settings for the lock nut on the prop:-

245-294 Nm or 181-217ft-lbs

Cleaning the throttle bodies, if you get the engine warm first you will have a much easier time with the boost hoses - when they are cold they are hard to get on and off. While you do the job, disconnect the battery to reset the ecu - this takes around 30 minutes. Jam the throttle open with a screwdriver or something in the middle where the cable connects. What usually happens when you clean the throttle bodies is the crap gets washed back to the idle valve assembly and jams it. On the back passenger side of the plenum you will see a rubber hose going onto the idle valve - pull this off and squirt a dose of carb cleaner in there too ;)
