Hi Guys , i'm new to the forum and have just (yesterday) bought a TT. Well it was born a TT (i think) but they have been either bypassed or removed. It is a 1990 2 seater..... Engine #004058

I have a few questions for you all and need to know if i have bouight a lemon...

1. It hesitates all of the time. The guy who i bought it from told me that it is the alternator that is the problem. He says its a 90amp when it should really be 110amp. Is this the case? Also when i have the AC, Full beam, Stereo, and fog lights on its even worse. On thing i have noticed though is that when i open the fuel cap (when i go to put petrol in and open the cap slightly) i get about 10 seconds of air pressure coming out. Could this be related to the fuel filter thus causing the hesitation?

2. My speedo and temp gauge dont work but everything else does. One strange thing is that the mileage counter still goes round even though the speedo doesnt work. I thought this was not possible. Once you disconnect the speedo the clock stops going round.

3. When i take my foot of the clutch if lets out air pressure. If i keep my foot on the clutch about 1" down it stops. Is this normal?

Thats all for now. I hope you guys can help.

cheers

I'll leave this to the experts, but I just want to say, that the pressure hiss when filling at petrol station is the same as mine.

Is this normal ?. I'm using super unleaded.

Ok Cheers, thats one thing of my mind. Thanks for your help.

Now i just need to know what the other problems are.

the problems not likely to be the alternator - tho loading it up with consumers may be making the sympoms worse.

start with basics - clean the elecrical connectors on the throttle position sensor, ptu, cas, coils, temp sensor - these can have a nasty habit of forming corrosion on the terminals. may as well clean the throttle bodies with carb cleaner while your there.

check/replace your plugs, air & fuel filters.

disconnect battery for at least 30 mins to reset ecu adaptation data.

pressure release in fuel tank is normal

pressure release at clutch is not - sounds like your clutch servo is drawing in air. in fact this could even be your hesitation problem - drawing unmetered air in.

Hmmm,

How and where would i find all of these electrical sensors? can anyone send me a picture with the connectors shown or something like that.

When i disconnect the battery, what will this help?

What could i do about my clutch? When i test drove the car on the first day the clutch was reaaly hard to press and i told the guy to fix it. The second time i drove it it was nice and soft just like my previous car (92 VW corrado G60).

Back on to the hesitation, the first time i drove it it was $hite, the second time i drove it he told me that he replaced the alternator and it drove a lot better. Now after i have bought it it hesitates again.

Forget the alternator!!! That isn't the problem! Even if the alternator was seized completely the belt could not provide enough drag on the engine without snapping very quickly. Sounds like you have a leak on your clutch servo (as paul says) which is allowing unmetered air to enter the engine. Have you done an ecu diagnostic test? http://www.ttzd.com/tech/diagnostictech.html

Try following this write up - http://www.twinturbo.net/ttnetfaq/FAQpages/hesitate2.html - should help you with the connectors and electrical side...

Check the hoses around the clutch master cylinder for security and listen for hissing on idle...

Sounds about as dodgy as you can get if you ask me.

Did they tell you this about the turbos?

Sounds like you've bought an imported non-turbo version to me with LOTS of problems.

Speedo and temp gauge not working? Could be a speed convertor, speed sensor or speedo problem. Temp gauge could be a loose connector or faulty gauge. Could be they've clocked it and not put the connectors back correctly...

Sounds odd changing the alternator and why have they fitted the wrong one if that's the case?

If they've fixed a hard clutch and now it has problems and is light then I dread to think.

If you've spotted this lot already I'd think there were lots more problems yet to be discovered. £$£$£$£$£

I notice you say that you got your first 300tt, maybe this won't be your last. With all those problems I hope that you paid peanuts for the car, cos I reckon that whoever sold it to you is talking bull***.

It may be that these problems could be ironed out easily, but why did you accept the car with them? Do you have some sort of come-back or warranty. If you do then I would suggest taking it to an expert, JeffTT, SE or someone.

I can't believe that you are not sure wether the Turbos are removed or not working? Is this a wind-up? If you don't have a boost guage then you have a non turbo 300.

Just noticed your in Bahrain! So JeffTT or SE won't be much use to you.

Still think this is some sort of a wind-up?

Hi Guys,

No this is not a wind up.

I live in Bahrain and cars are cheap over here. I got the car for BD/900 (roughly 1500 quid) and my 92 G60 VW Corrado(Supercharger cracked!!). The reason i bought it was because i can get a full engine with turbo's and the loom for about BD/300 (roughly 500 quid)! So i thought in the worst case senario i can just put another engine in there. Rather not to though !

Since my last post i have discovered a few things. The car was originally a TT but the owner upgraded the turbos and cracked the block. Instead of worrying about this he simply put a 300 engine in there. I believe he had some problems with the loom and stuff but thats part of the reason why it is how it is today. I spoke to the mechanic who fitted the engine and he told me that he had a few teething problems but not too many. I have found the the speedo and temp gauge are just loose wires in the engine bay and the clutch is in need of help. I also have the boost gauge and it works upto 0 but wont go above it. THATS why i say that i dont know whether it has turbos or not!! If it does they must be in safety mode or something.

I have also learned that the alternator is only a 70ampere and that it should be at least a 95-100. I am going to change this anyway and see how it is then.

The mechanics have told me to change the alternator, clean the injectors, replace the spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter,etc... and that then i should have a really nice 300 with no problems apart from the clutch. Lets say i have to replace whatever is causing the clutch to suck in air. What part is that and how could i make sure. I think its the master cylinder but not sure.

Just to let you know a few things about the car. Its a 1990 red, full respray(really good job), 160,027Km(about 100k miles). Like new interior, apart from $hit-head speakers. So i personally think i have got a good deal. My corrado was very poorly and needed about 3000 quid spending on it. This included SuperCharger, dorr handles, windscreen, brake padw, disks, ABS, and the list goes on......

Anyway, please let me know what you all think i should check and/or replace on my 300 and help me get it the way it should be.

Cheers

Please coul someone guide me on what to do first as now my clutch is getting louder (air leak or vacuum noise). It still hesitates and is even worse when the lights and AC are on.

Please see the first post and the previous post above for more info

Thanks

PS What size are the speakers in the doors?

Thanks again :-)

Anybody know what the part numbers is because here in bahrain the stealers dont stock 300zx parts and you have to get duplicate of everything.

Is the clutch servo the master cylinder? or is it actually called a clutch servo.

Sorry for sounding dumb

Cheers
