Dose anyone now what the legal requirment is for a front side light.ie can i use a running day light.does it have to be 5 watt ect ect.

They have to give an approximation of the width of the car, be able to be turned on when engine is not running as well as when it is running.

 

This is a cut and paste from MOT regs:

Max 400mm from side of vehicle

Minimum separation distance: no requirement

Max height 1500mm

Angles of visibility - must be visible 80 degrees outboard and 45 degrees inboard.

British Standard mark indicated in the photometric and physical requirements for ligting equipment under reference BS6102.

No size requirement.

Must be white

No requirement as to wattage or intensity.

No tell-tale required.

Im having a blonde moment. your regs states: Angles of visibility - must be visible 80 degrees outboard and 45 degrees inboard. question from were? so if i am standing directly in front of the car i should see them from a collective 80% angle ie 40 to the left and 40 to the right and inboard i give up?

Not a clue to be honest. it was just a cut and paste!

 

I can't imagine many MOT testers are too anal about them. just make sure they are a good size and bright enough (standard 501 bulbs are enough)

You've copied and pasted....must be white, so side lights cannot be yellow but yellow is fine for dipped lights and front fogs ?

now thinking if i put the flasback bulbs that are white then go amber when indicators are on ,and put them in the front indicators of which you can see clearly from the front. or ill have to mount some day running lights in the front somwere but dont want to spoil the look of the front.
