Well I fitted my hid's at the weekend, one of the many jobs I have put off for ages, but now it has caused a very odd issue.

When I don't have my lights on, the auto box selects all gears properly, up and down.

When I have my lights on however, it doesn't want to select 1st and pulls away in 2nd ( or that's what it feels like anyway).

I can manually select 1st and 2nd with the lights on, so makes me wonder what's going on.

Its not the only issue caused either, as mentioned in another thread, my speedo needle also acts erratically when I first switch the lights on ( but this doesn't really bother me too much).

As someone mentioned in the other thread, could this all be down to the convertor on my clocks?

If so, if I was to replace with UK clocks ( which I am looking to get anyway), would this solve the odd issues?

Also with UK clocks, I'm guessing they would mean I don't need the convertor to bypass the speed limiter?

Sorry if these are stupid questions but its all got me a bit stumped at the moment.

I'd remove the convertor first and see which of your issues remain.

Should only take half hour to strip out the clocks and disconnect the convertor.

Remove the cluster and disconnect all the plugs on the back (4 I think) you will see on the large plug on the left spliced into the wire, a little block, normally about a couple of centimeters square. Just cut the block out and rejoin the wires without the block between. That's from memory, someone please correct if that's wrong.,

If it has been converted correctly ( may not be by the sounds of it lol) you only need to re join the yellow/green feed back to the tail left going into the left hand plug, as you look at the dash.

Fitting HIDS shouldnt affect anything else lol, so youve got an earth short somewhere, did you disturb any of the wires to the plugs behind the headlights, sat on the inner wheel arch, these are for the autobox.

Remember the problem I had with the speedo needle going crazy when lights were switched on?

Well all that stopped when I removed my speedo convertor a few weeks back and everything has been spot on since.

That's why I am suggesting removing the convertor box as he is describing the same symptoms I had after fitting Hids.

We always fit the convertor on to the back of the speedo so no looms are cut, linking the cut in the pc be track will be effective, however I doubt the convertor is the issue as 1st and 2nd gear are mechanically operated and even if you had no speed they would work fine, more likley the new ballasts on the HIDs are causing a car wide disruption, try connecting just one HID unit and then the other, if the problem is only one sided it will point to which ballast is causing the issue.

OK, cheers for the info and help, I do have another set of ballasts so hopefully it will be as simple as Jeff's suggesting.

Still want to swap for UK clocks though, so the question still stands... Will they bypass the speed restriction on a JDM car? Not that I want to drive that quickly :shifty:

The convertor tricks the ecu into thinking its going slower therefore removing the 112mph limit, fitting UK clocks should do the same thing as the resistor in the back of the speedo board is at the correct ohmage. The rev limiter however can only be lifted with a socketed ecu and new chip.

I have UK clocks on a Japanese car and still have limiter in place :(

Are they though?

I took them from a UK car and had to remove the converter. How can you tell?

Do you mean you had to remove the converter from the donor UK clocks? if so they were not true UK clocks and just had a face change.

No, I mean I had to remove the in line block converter.

What inline block convertor? There are 4 plugs on the back of UK clocks the same as Jap, nothing else attached.

Unless it had a speedo convertor

Well that's that issue solved as Andyp has already done that for me :)

Yep, a Speedo converter. That is what we've been talking about, right??? :slightlyembarrassed:

No problem bud, we are here to help :thumbup1: -Ok, if you have a genuine set of UK clocks, then you do not need a speedo convertor and if you are using a set which you believe to be UK clocks and limit is not removed then as Jaff stated they are probably Jap clocks with UK faces.

Before i need to go and post up some pics of the differences lol, does the speed read 30mph on the clocks with a sat nav?

I don't own a satnav, so can't help on that one.

Rear of UK, note the number 37P00 on this one a screw is missing in the 10k hole

Jap rear 40P10

Ok, fortunately my dash is in bits. So it seems I have uk fascia, but the rear is the same as the Japanese unit with the 40P10 code printed. I also have a screw in the 10k hole.

Ok we might be getting somewhere, here is a pic of the board on a UK speedo clock

Check yours and we may be able to assess whether someone put a UK facia on a Jap speedo or not, a Jap speedo has 2 potentiometers/blue trim pots

Sorry mate, not ignoring you ;) just a hectic day. Will try and check back of speedo tomorrow, it would be good to know what's actually fitted.
