It's now a set size.

DVLA say:

Lettering and spacing must be of a set size. They must conform to one of the groups shown at:- Number plates fitted after 1 September 2001 or Number plates fitted before 1 September 2001.

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regmarks/reg_marks_current_requirements.htm

Strangely, it is impossible for a rear rectangular Japanese plate to be a legal UK plate. The dimensions of the required lettering just don't fit the DVLA spec.

Some people use the old m/c size letters and some squeeze the car size letters close together to fit on the plate.

Non-DVLA plates are, of course, perfectly legal for, e.g. show or display use. It's only if you use them on the road instead of DVLA spec plates that they become illegal. And, of course, no-one here does that sort of thing. :)

Was it a 'retro' law? i.e. does that mean that ANY non-standard sized plate is illegal, even if it was made and fitted BEFORE the introduction of this worthwhile bit of red tape?

DOh! Forget it, just re-read the other post which tells me that you're OK if it was made before the law was introduced.

Still think it's a waste of time though.

Hi B16 ROY

My mate with the Scooby designed his own number plates on line. I think there is a link on the scooby site.

You get to choose characters etc. Put in your address and credit card details and they get mailed to you.

Maybe also the fact that you design your own means they arent liable for making illegal plates

Willie

You can also try http://www.abgraphics.co.uk/

They are usually at Billing and will make any size or shape of plate you want, with any letter type. For "show purposes" only..of course;)

JEZ

Hi,

Just thought I'd let you know that I tried the Fancyplates.com site and after playing around on their design your own number plate page, I ordered some.

I ordered thurs morning and they arrived today (sat AM)exactly as I requested them.

You can choose the font, colour, border and logo you want and see it on screen b4 ordering.

Funny thing is, I wasn't even looking to replace the plates on my car.

JEZ;)

Have to agree with JEZ, customer service or what! Great site great plates! Now all I need is about 10K for the rest of the mods to go with the plate!
