Advise from Groover or Phutumsch (or any LED specialist) please....

Just a little advise please guys.......

I am looking to purchase some T10/501 amber filaments. I have been looking on eBay for a high output led bulb. I searched for hours last night only to find all sellers saying "high output" "power led" "high power"....... it goes on for ever :(

Do you know a good eBayer or other company that can supply a genuine high wattage/lumen T10/501 LED filament?

Many thanks.......

Alz.

Hmm, this could be something I need to think about now, although am I right in thinking 501 is the side repeaters? I need something really bright and amber to shine through my newly tinted front indicators, I may of gone a little overboard with the tinting spray :blushing:

I use 3W Yellow LEDs for my indicators (two each side) and they are really bright even in full daylight

Also you could use 10W LEds but you need to build a 'constant current source' circuit to drive them (not so difficult, just a handful of cheap components)

Rougly speaking high power LEds give the equivalent of 10x the power of normal bulbs - so 3W = 30W, 10W = 100W etc

Bear in mind LEDs are a 'pinpoint' light source - so for something like a 10W LED i would suggest mount it 'backwards' shining into a reflector

Give me a shout and I will help as much as I can, as a prototype I'd be happy to build some into indicator housings if you send them to me

crap speeling

I have these switchback bulbs in my indicator units and I love everything about them, you might not even know you can get such a thing !! And why are you tying yourself to T10's and are they for for the front corner indicator chambers ?

For indicators? And how bright are we talking?

Hi Graham, Front indicators yes, but not standard. I am doing a little mod on the original repeaters and using the smaller connector which requires this filament.

Hey Rich, thanks for the offer matey, but the mod I have done to the front indicator is almost complete, just need the bulbs.

These are the wrong fitment Andy..... I am using a smaller connector due to limited space between the IC and rear of the repeater.

Cheers guys,

They look crazy. is that combining your side lights and indicators onto one single lamp holder?

Correct, white side lights work as normal, flip to indicate and they alternate white then yellow and then of course revert back to side light. 3 wires to the bulb holder which is in fact a stock stop/tail one with very slightly modified lugs, one earth, one side light feed and the other indicate wire, simples .

Sounds like a nice idea. Do you have to drill the indicator housing or does the other lamp holder fit? I should be able to get a pair from a scrappy. have you got any pictures of the modded lugs?

I had an idea to put angel eyes in as side lights and then fit another pair of HID's as a fog light but in the indicator housing. But If I could combine the side lights and the indicators on one holder, then there would be a spare way in the housing for the HID fogs. So I wouldn't need the angel eyes.

You're thinking of putting HID's in behind a plastic indicator housing :w00t:.

My dual purpose bulb holder lugs are so simple you just remove one completely and trim another down with a dremel.

My other chamber in the housing is a T10 bulb/holder and this comes on as a kerb light when I indicate that corner but the dips need to be on for this to activate or liven up.

Is this not a good idea? I figured it would be similar to your fog light HID install, but in the indicators. So I can fit the fog light vents.

Not sure if it'll fit though, I can't remember how long a HID lamp is.

But back to these switchbacks. So if I just find myself the oem lamp holder from the rear for the break lights and side lights and that will fit in the existing indicator slot? and then I just need to wire them up? instead of modding the lugs, could I just leave a little bit of cable on the old bulb holder and the existing lugs and then just insulink the new cables on? the diagram on the eBay add is confusing me a little though.

How will you seat the H3 bulb, what will the beam pattern be like, not known it been done before but eh give it a go !!

They're not that long, not sure this is your only issue.

Get yourself a couple of stop/tail bulb holders from the rear lights complete with the 3 severed wires and wire these into your side light and indicator feeds.

The stop/tail bulb holders will not fit into the indicator housing hole (cos it's meant for the indicator holder as the lugs are in different positions) without you just taking a bit off the lugs here and there, then they'll just offer in and twist home a little.

Excellent, cheers I'll have a look at getting it sorted. I may forget about the hid's for the time been.

  • 3 months later...

I've managed to get some lamp holders, just need to buy the lamps now, and try and bodge them in.

Looking through ebay, I've come across these

They're a bit cheaper than the other ones,

And look to have more L.E.D's too, can anyone see any reason why these won't work?

I have the bottom linked switchbacks in mine and they work perfect, the yellow and white colour is perfect and they're bright and crisp.

Expensive yes, and is the reason I have removed mine and they're sitting in my dry garage while the car is sorned on the drive.

any particular reason why you went with those ones over others though? The amber L.E.D's do look different on the cheaper ones, but the colour looks the same I think. With my indicators been so heavily tinted a figured brightness should be a priority.

Think you might be thinking more smd's the brighter they are, it does stand for reason though but I have not found this to be the case. I do have a youtube channel under the same user name and there's a vid of my switchbacks in action.

There didn't seem to be another alternative when I bought mine so that's an easy answer to that question.

Are the ones with more smd's not too long ?

I've asked the question and apparently they are 40mm long, so should be swallowed by it.

Did you have to install the load resistor on your set or is that just for newer cars?

The lighting smd part is 40mm ? Add this to a 22mm base and total length is 62mm ?

Mine are practically 50mm in total, made up of a 22mm base and a 27mm lighted part.

Just get a plug n play fast flash relay, load resistors is a load more work.

If it's the stock relay then I don't really know how it'll react to a switchback bulb, perhaps it'll flash amber amber white, amber amber white instead of amber white amber white !!

But what the eck fast flash relays are only a few pounds - I'd get one on order if I was you.

You got a link?

I figured the amber would just flash normally on the relay and the white wouldn't be effected weather side lights were on or not. I maybe confused on how the switchback works, and probably the lamp holder too.

Have a look at this thread

Switchback bulbs requires a twin filament bulb holder, ie the stop/tail ones where there are 3 wires coming from it if it was severed from the rear loom.

One wire is ground and this serves both the sidelight and indicator part. If your sidelights are on therefore white smds are lit and you indicate the amber rules and the white goes out, hence the switching with the blinking. No sidelights on and the indicator works as normal.
