Hi!

I was reading a few older posts just now and I read something about long right-handers being death to Z32 engines That grabbed my attention as I have a day at Spa booked in October  and although there isn't really a long right-hander both Pouhon and Blanchimont are v quick left-handers.

Is there a weakness in the sump baffling on these cars? I've only had mine a couple of months and I haven't got up to speed yet on every little Z32 wrinkle. If there is an oil surge problem, is there a solution?

On a separate topic, I'm OK with my brake set-up generally (floating Brembo discs and AP 6-pots with Ferodo DS2500 at the front; grooved discs with standard Nissan calipers at the back; braided lines and Dot5.1 fluid) but the pads on the back are completely anonymous and look standard. What do people use on the back for fast road/occasional trackday use? The Ferodo website is completely silent on Z32 rear pads.

Other than the above I'm sooo looking forward to getting back to Spa - I've done days there before and I reckon it'll suit the Z nicely. Also done over 100 laps of the Nordschleife but time doesn't permit a detour there this time. Expensive now, isn't it? I remember when it was only €8/lap! OMG; I'm starting to ramble - sorry...!

Any other general chat on Z-specific trackday stuff would be welcome.

Cheers!

yes they do have a problem with long right hand bends ... its because the sump is made to one side and the oil slosh;s away from the oil pump pick up .. and can starve the engine of oil

there are 2 ways of sorting this ... Make sure u have plenty of oil in the engine and a little more .. or New after market sump

Thanks for that. Sounds like Spa might actually be OK - there isn't a long right-hander there.

But if I went the after-market sump route do you have any suggestions?

Or accusump, which is like an additional tank that senses any drops in oil pressure and pumps extra oil into the system, then when pressure returns to normal the tank re primes itself. I looked at that system but didn't want the added complications and having to mount an extra oil tank somewhere. So I went for the above linked system. A baffled sump from America. Did take 6 months to arrive and they want a standard sump in exchange. Done a good few trackday since fitting and it's been fine. But I've also got massive oil lines and 24 row cooler so my capacity is up anyway. Also not cheap, can't remember the figure but sure it was £800.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Danny

Unless you're running very sticky tires, I wouldn't worry about it too much, just make sure you're oil level is on the high side before starting.

You might get some smoke from the pcv system, but that's only annoying rather than a real problem and can be fixed

agreed and the best sump is the ep racing one takes 8 quarts and been tried and tested I will be buying one myself

This was a problem at Warrick Farm Circiut at Polo corner in Australia with V-8 HO Falcons ect, the oil use too surge up into the cylinder bank and knock the top of a the pistons [ Oil caused a hydruilic lock in the cylinder bank ] not the big end bearing locking up through lack of oil pressure. A good sump baffle use to fix the problem, only happened to Vee engines.Warrick Farm car race circuit closed down now.

My experience on Spa Track this May at Spa Classic gave me no real problem with oil pressure.

I was not using slicks, and I was still on a learning curve with my car. Temperatures both for water and oil were on the up level, but I put this on the load imposed by the hilly shape... I just topped the oil level a little over the max point for safety.

You should never miss a Spa track opportunity, and it will make you come back on any occasion: My favourite track until now!!

Hi Guys

Thanks for the useful comments. Like Hub280ZX I won't be using any trick tyres and part of the day will be used to find out all about the Z's handling - I figured it's better to find out at Spa with run-offs the size of Wales rather than find out the hard way on the public roads this winter. Not that I'm expecting my self-discipline to last all day... :w00t:

So I've decided against the new sump idea - the car will do precious little on the track compared to my last car so I'll just take a gamble. Should be OK I reckon...

And yeah - Spa is a fantastic track. This'll be my 2nd time driving there and I'm really looking forward to it. But it's not my favourite - although it's close. For the sheer WOW factor nothing beats the Nordschleife for me - once I'd driven there everything else just seemed a bit, well, short!!

So thanks again. Anyone have any suggestions for fast road/trackday pads for a standard ZX rear caliper. please?
