Hi all, I'm due to start work in a couple of weeks as a taxi driver, taken on by a mate who is an owner driver. This isn't something long term nor is it the question I'm asking but bare with me :) we will be splitting the days and nights equally, and I've been told ill be taking home about 250 a week before tips. And to be honest I'm not arsed if I do less as this jobs is just to keep the pennies coming in while I do my hgv class2 test.

Now the question is what do you think my chances are of getting a job? I love driving its a definate passion of mine, hence the taxi driving, I've got a clean licence etc etc, I'm only 21 so obviously no experience. But I'm physically and mentally in the prime of my life.... And I've looked on the net and there does seem to be a few jobs which are advertised as no experience nessercery.... Any hgv drivers on here? Opinions welcome people! Thanks :)

My brother in law has all his Hgv licenses through the army. He's leaving soon and that's an option for him, we were discussing that line of work exactly, from what I understand lack of experience may work in your favour as companies want to train you there way not iron out your already acquired bad habits. You can but try.

I've got my class 1 and have over 20 yrs driving the bloody things, also I own a black cab which is what I'm doing at the moment.

You're under 25 so most haulage companies won't touch u coz of insurance, also u have no experience so again you're going to struggle. Best chances is to start with agency work so u get the experience and also u get to hear of work going.

Now taxi...... It's VERY quiet at the mo, for u to get £250 the car will need to be earning £700 approx, that's a lot of hours mate (7, 12 hr shifts ??). If you have other options I would go for them but if this is all you can do then good luck mate, but it's hard work and very lo g hours just to make a living !!

Send me a pm and ill send u my number if u want a chat mate :)

I have 12 years class 1, and I have to agree with scubanesh on the agency work plan. Firms will be more likely to use you through agencies as you would be insured by the agency. The biggest downside is that you will get all the crap runs that permanent staff won't do.

Both my parents are taxi drivers.

They were owner drivers for over 10 years. Money is hard to make that way, as you pay for your own fuel and maintenance. Also most taxi operators will send their own drivers for the better paid jobs.

Even with me doing most of the maintenance on their taxi it still doesn't make alot of money. And if a part goes that you need to wait for, then you're essentially out of a job until it arrives.

And driving for other people...just as crap really. You only get 40 or maybe 50% of the takings (although all tips are yours). You would have to work long shifts to make any kind of decent money.

As said above, Taxi-ing is quiet at the moment. It's an expensive luxury for many people. They now bus or walk.

Cheers people. Its something I will stick to and keep you all updated on things. Like I said the taxi job is just for the meantime. Its a 50/50 split apart from sunday where whatever I earn is mine. Back to hgv and agency work it almost certainly what ill be doing.
