G'day folks!! I've got a '91 tt jap import that is currently alternating between two faults. The most common is that she's ticking over at around 2000 revs, she'll do this for a week or so then switch to a second fault which is even more infuriating, this being that after the car has attained whatever speed the position of the accelerator pedal determines, rather than cruise nicely at that speed, the revs will dip at half second (approx) intervals by about 400 revs untill I accelerate or de-celerate at which point she does both fine, until, the speed levels out again.

She'll do this for about 3 days or so then, revert back to the high-revving fault again!!!

Anyone out there got any ideas?? It would be greatly appreciated cos it's doing my head in!!

start by cleaning the throttle bodies & idle valve with carb cleaner, also check & clean the connectors on your PTU, throttle pot sensor, temp sensor etc with electrical cleaner

Cheers for the advice and offer of help guys. One other thing I forgot to mention; I had this problem approx 8 weeks ago, but back then I also had the problem of my cats overheating and was told back then (amongst other things) to check the contacts on the PTU. When I did, I found that the lower contacts were green with copper oxide. I cleaned them as best as I was able and gave them a squirt of WD40 and, hey presto, all faults gone. Until, 2 weeks ago after I left the car out in an absolute monsoon over a complete weekend. Since that soaking she's been having these aforementioned problems. I don't know if this makes a difference?:)

Mine is also doing the intermittent high tickover at the moment and I have yet to clean the idle valve, but a throttle body clean AND ECU reset have improved it.

I don't want to sound like a complete numpty, but, how do I go about resetting the ECU etc:confused:

I had the high tick over and I cleaned the throttle bodies I cleaned the temp sensor, I reset the ECU.

It actually cleared when I got a new fuel filter because it was due one and I would rather do things slowley and not have to change everything at once.

I changed the fuel filter which I didnt know how long it was on there and I reset the ECU.

It was only a week later that I noticed that it hadnt been doing the irretic idle.

Try it.

You might like it ;)

Unless you have a Consult/ConZult then the easy way is to disconnect the battery for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Cheers guys, that's given me loads to try. It's all the more urgent because I have to sell my baby in the next three weeks as I need the cash to go towards a house deposit. THanks again:D
