Took the Zed out for the first time in a couple of weeks yesterday, and went on a bit of a blast - started noticing that the car pulled nicely in first and second, but when it got to third it seemed like the revs were rising disproportionately to my speed, and I felt I needed to change up at about 80-ish mph. The problem didn't appear in 4th or 5th either.

Is third on the Zed quite a short gear, or could my clutch be slipping?

Looked back through the receipts and it was only changed about 13k miles ago by SE.

Anyone have any ideas how much it is for a new clutch and fitting?

best way to see, is to put load on the engine?

put it in 4th or 5th and accelorate hard from a low rpm.

youll know if it slips then.

New clutch, depending on what your aspirations are regarding horespower, anywhere from 400-800 for a nice twin plate clutch.

fitting, well it depends again,i have had mine fitted for 150-and then 220.

Bugger. :(

I'd better try that when I get home then.

If I do try that, and it seems OK, any other ideas what it might be?

Oh, and what are the tell-tale signs of clutch slip? will there be any kind of nasty mechanical noises?

well it could be oil on the surface? although that is not very common.

Tell tale sign of clutch is plate slipping, ie try what i said and you will notice it straight away, and once it starts to go im afraid it will really go fast. :(

it sucks, but look at it in a posotive way lol, you get to buy a nice shiny bit of kit he he.

sounds like the clutch matey:(

speak to smithy, got my stage 2 RPS clutch from him for about £340 delivered i believe.

there is some adjustment on the linkage between the pedal & servo, but to be honest, it'll prob only be a short term solution

hth

Can't be bothered repeating myself! LOL :D

"YOU LOVE A BIT OF IT!!!" :D

OK, another quick question - is replacing the clutch a specialist only job or something that can be carried out by my local place - only because I'm working away form home at the moment with a company car, so I dont have much time to get to SE or other specialists in the next few weeks.

Are you running standard boost? If so, I would say that the clutch is razzed.

I have the same problem but it has only started since I had the JWT chip in with 14PSI. If I lower it to 11PSI, its ok, when it's warmed up that is.

I am currently trying to find Uprated clutch prices but they are not exactly the cheapest thing in the word. I might have to restrict the boost for a bit.

I wouldn't trust Nelsons to do a clutch on a Z, let a lone a local place. ZedWorld everytime for me.

Goodluck on your search.

Jesus, we should have had a group buy on clutches. ChrisC has just got one I think. Mine is on order cos my ones slipping and Ajay is on its way too.

Got back from working in Bristol tonight and took the Zed out. Waited for it to warm up, then started playing. 3rd doesn't seem to pull quite as hard as 4th or 5th, difficult to compare to 2nd.

Tried Warrens putting it in 4th and 5th to start (although I must admit I didn't accelerate hard), and lifted the clutch - in 4th it pulled slightly, but i think thats because I eased off the clutch too gentl, and in fifth the revs just dropped like a stone until it almost stalled. Is this expected or should I have been looking for any other tell-tale signs?

Do other people notice 3rd as not having as much pull?

Oh, and with regards to me feeling like I needed to change into 4th at 80, I was just being a pu**y, because I took it higher than that in 3rd tonight!! (on my private test track hofficer)

Mine only slipped every now and then and really only in 4th and 5th gear. Now it slips more often in every gear when I use more that 50% throttle.

Best way to see if its slipping is do 40 in 5th then floor it till about 80-90 so you have to do it on the motorway.

Keep your eye on the revs and watch to see it change rate quickly. Mine was fine to about 3000 rpm then it slipped upto 3500 and then slipped down again.

I tried pretty much that very thing last night - i take it if the clutch slips, it'll jump up/down the rev range like you said - it doesn't do that at all, revs steadinly rise.

Did the same in third, the revs just rise steadily, it just seems that they rise too quickly - I bet its just me not having driven the car very often over the last few weeks!!

On a diferent subject, what is the redline on a J-spec TT?

The rev limiter comes in at 7200 I think it is. The same for a UK car.
