safety boost drops the boost to 7psi. This happens when the engine is not up to temperature, and when the dettonation sensor picks up detonation. Probably some other causes for it to come on.

Theres no real way of finding out, it wont show on an ECU diag etc.. You will almost deffinatly notice a drop in performance, and you might be able to see a difference on the stock boost guage but it is very poor.

As many of you know i have a problem of my Z not revving over 5500. I thought my boost was fine (ie no safety boost).

When cold my stock boost gauge shows the same as it does when hot. Could it just be so inaccurate that im in safety boost and i didnt know it?

Thanks..

Rob

To be dead certain you can prove it with a Techtom or Consult/ConZult. If the BSCVs are not 'on' then you are stuck in 'standard' (not safety) boost.

Anyone have a consult i can borrow in the south? :)

talking of safety boost my z went all the way to 13.5 psi even when cold ( i know i shouldent do it) so is there a problem!!

I do but Az has got it at the moment. Perhaps if you can arrange to get up to Slough he could show you how to use it etc.

I really should give you your Conzult back at some point hey Andy..! Ahem.. erm.. :D (not to mention stumping up to buy one.. and stumping up £20 for Craig.. and buying a new house..)

Anyway, don't forget that in safety boost, the ignition is also retarded.

AFAIK there are several reasons your car may only boost to 7psi;

It's cold - not all cars do this (possibly only ones based on UK/Euro ECU's. My J-spec certainly doesn't). Not sure if this retards the ignition as well or not.

Code 34 on the ECU - the ECU can't 'see' the detonation sensor, so keeps the BCSV's (Boost Control Solenoid Valves) shut, and so at 7psi of boost. The ignition is also retarded.

Detonation - the ECU picks up detonation. No ECU code is set, but the BCSV's stay closed (off) and the ignition is retarded. This condition is reset the next time you stop & start the car.

The stock boost guage is absolute pants, and it's nigh on impossible to tell if you're in SB or not from it..

But it's like driving two different cars, so fairly easy to tell.

And Rob - if you are anywhere near me, you're welcome to pop over (seeing as Andy has just offered the use of his Conzult) - I've had lots of experience with this one (and I'm still stuck at 7psi...)

If your boost is increased with a boost controller (A'pexi, Blitz, et al), then the usual installation procedure is to disconnect the BCSV's since the controller sets the boost - in which case, you'll hit 13.5psi whatever the temperature of your engine.
