I changed the oil and anti-freeze on my car recently and took the old stuff to the local tip. Oil was no problem but they wouldn't take the anti-freeze so I called the council and was told it's hazardous waste so I would have to contact a private waste disposal company. I just called one and was told £12.50+vat for my 5 litre bottle! Considering how toxic this stuff is I thought the council would want to provide a facility for disposal?

Yeah it's amazing that the local councils are making it increasingly difficult to get rid of any waste. For me, this just encourages fly tipping of which costs the council's bucket loads in clear up operations. They should at very least be more helpful and offer assistance and guidance.

Can it not be watered down and disposed of?

Lol well it could be but regardless of dilution it's still the same amount of poisonous waste your getting rid of. Regardless of whether it goes in the rainwater drain, sewer, or dumped in the drive it still makes its way to aquatic organisms. Most would say 'its only a little bit don't worry' but I'm guessing the majority dump it and I don't want to do that. Just irritates me that the tip used to take it as long as it was a sealed bottle. They take paint!
