anyone had them, fook me they are painfull, ive recently started running (for about 4 months now) and have achieved 2 miles a night 6 days a week, then suddenly woke up with an almight pain in my shin and calve, feels like ive constantly been kicked in the shin everytime i walk, really annoyed me as i havent been for a run for about a month now

last night i went to my first fun run meet (professinal runners setting up classes for beginners) and im shocked as to how little i knew about running, after my first hour session of HIIT training my leg feels so much better (although very sore this morning lol) a lot it was due to not warming up correctly and not doing the correct stretching, ive also been told i pushed myself too far as a beginner

long gone are the days of just whacking on a pair of shoes and off you go, there is so much has changed in performance running since i was at school lol, and its no help that im a lot older now lol

but on a plus im a very healthy 12.3 stone now down from a regular 13.7-14 stone lol, such a great release from stress aswell, when ya running and you concentrate on your running your mind empites from all the stress (comes back when ya stop though lol)

can thoroughly recommend running as a pastime and stress reliver, but please join a local club and get some expert advice as i wouldnt wish shin splints on anyone (well maybe some lol)

any other runner, joggers or fun runners on here?

Allan

Morning Alan,

I started running a couple of years back, went from 13 1/2 stone to just over 11 now just from running. My advice - warm up and down religiously and get proper running shoes - they make a world of difference ;)

Everything will ache after a while with age though mate! lol

Running is the only exercise I've really enjoyed, as you said, clears your mind and you just feel better after it.

I totally agree Vijay.

I run a lot and its tough starting out. But as an exercise its absolutely fantastic.

I suffer from splints as I have ridiculously flat feet and over pronate. This is where my running style puts additional strain on the joints and muscle. I would often have to rest weeks between big runs and i could never shift them completely. Even walking would hurt if a ran a few short runs in a week. I didn't buy into the whole it's your trainers crap as I didn't see they could make that much difference. HOW WRONG WAS I???

I went to a specialist running shop who made me run around the store in my socks. They observed how my foot struck the ground and how I pushed off. From this they recommended some Nike running trainers that offer support where I need it. I bought them and went for my first run. Wow! I've always run in normal, off the shelf trainers and these things felt a million times better. They didn't even cost that much!

I now don't ever get splints. I still ache after really pushing it, but I can literally run 3/5 times a week and really enjoy it. I got these in November and went on a bit of a weight loss challenge. I lost two stone in two months through better eating and regular runs.

Don't loose the bug. Get some fitted trainers and keep it up!

This is a good exercise you need to build up the tissue on the shin. Hard to explain easily but the best exercise is the use the muscles on the front so actively lifting the toes keeping the heel on the floor try to mentally connect with the movement. Even sitting on the loo you can do it and if necessary can pop light weights on the foot but I've never needed to do that. Strengthening this area you will not suffer shin splints :-)

i was given a very good exercise for shin splints last night

stnad with you feet together then slowly raise one leg to the point when your foot is dangling its a few inches off the floor, once you have you balance close your eyes, as you struggle to keep your balance the muscle round the shin is working and will help to strengthen, its very hard to master and you can feel it working

sits back and imagines the amout of people trying this and falling over lol

Proper fitting running shoes for your style of running really will make a difference mate ;)

i thoink you could be right about the right fitting shoes, will see how this club goes as my leg feels much better with trying the new exercices ive been given

As car.mad said it's the muscle trying to tear off your tibia. It will repair itself if given time to heal.

When you go to the running shoe shop try to find one that will do a video analysis on a treadmill of how you run and suggest appropriate shoes. Chances are you have a biomechanical imbalance with muscle strength and flexibility, or your feet pronate (roll inwards) which is a common cause of shin splints. I went to a podiatrist and had a couple of pairs of custom made insoles made, wasn't cheap but beyond worth it!

The exercise Bob mentioned is good to balance power between the front and back of the lower leg.
