To import or not

All,

Some advice please!

What are the fundamental pros and cons of buying an import? I already know that it'll cost me an extra 250 quid per year to insure if it's from Japan, but I'm thinking that imports tend to be less pricey to buy in the first place. So - if I get a Jap import, and keep it for two years, I'll have broken even!

There are other things that worry me though.

* Isn't there some evil super-low speed limiter, that if I was to tinker with would alter my insurance some more?

* I've heard some worrying things about the quality of cars imported from Japan (probably gonna get flamed now :p )

* Will I struggle with emmissions tests etc.?

I've been scouring Andy P's 300zx.org.uk site, so I know the differences in bodywork etc. but are there any other things I should know or watch out for?

Bottom line: Is it worth holding out/paying more for a UK car?

Russ.

Well i think the people who have UK cars will tell you its worth holding out lol.

I have an import and im happy as pie with it.

To be honest i never even knew what an import was when i got my car lol.

As with any car be it UK or import, there can be things wrong with them, you will find JAP cars tend to have lower milage, and usually more mods (you can look at that as being a good or bad thing)

Speed limiter is deadeasy to remove.

Emissions shoul be no problem

Bottom line is, if you get a jap car chances are you will a car you want rather than settle for a comromise as there are far less UK cars around. (ie colour, gearbox, ect)

its worth holding out for a uk as the biggest hurdle by far is insurance.....on the plus side imports more often than not can come with extra toys and wheels already fitted if i had my chance again though id get a uk one instead of an import

I agree with captain horsepower. My 12 year old Jap na gets used every day, I've had it 2 and a half years, it does about 15 to 18k miles each year, and it sailed through it's MOT last weekend and the guy said it had a million years left in it. My wifes Saab - same age is rotting through. I'd buy Jap in preference to UK, but my current car is the only experience I have of Jap imports.

good luck

Jack
