A few weeks ago I mentioned that a certain dealer in Birmingham was selling a K.plated red import zed as a 1992 with the seat belt tags cut out, however the chassis build date showed it be a 1990 G reg!

Unfortunately the car was purchased by an unsuspecting customer who has since contacted me.

Firstly the car broke down on the return trip home (auto-box failure) and had to be transported. The dealer offered an alternative manaul car as a swap +some cash.

This is where I get involved and check out the alternative..

To say this zed was a dog is doing our canine friends an injustice!

This was a 1990 brown & black ? import with what looked like a replacement engine (possible) but the body work was horrid! misplaced front wing, dents, rust, bald tyres you name it.Mechanically it was a shed with at least £2000 needed to be spent on it and they were asking in excess of £6k for it!

I took the dealer to task on the K reg on a 1990 car and he feigned complete ignorance, I then said I would check the other zeds on his pitch but refused, however when he was not aware I checked another one on a J. reg and that turned out to be a 1989!!

Luckly for the customer he did have one good zed unregistered at the moment that he has accepted, bet that one will get the correct reg.

As with my previous post due to poss legal reasons all I can say is the dealer operates out of a pitch in Bham with a gravel driveway and is erm....of an indian persuasian. (no disrespect meant)

SCAREY!!!

Are there any letters we should be thinking about (Sesame Street style)? I'm thinking of the letters F and D... (obviously this is completely unrelated to car dealers, right?)

As I was the ignorant punter that bought said vehicle, those 2 letters do ring a bell.

Be carefull out there guys, the waters full of sharks !

Thanx again jeff, speak to you soon

i know this dealer as ive been there b4 , and all the cars where really rough looking , the one my wife and i tried was in safety boost and the body work was awfull :( , how can someone who is doing this still be getting away with it , ive seen it before and when they get caught out they close down and just open up somewhere else :(

im a bit worried about the age of mine now  how do i check when it was made the log book says 1991 and its on a h plate but the dealer i bought my car from has a really bad rep but it was the only manual in a 200 mile radius when i bought it

Hi,

You can have a look at the labels on the seat belts as these give a manufacture date.A dodgy dealer could have swopped them from a later car, but it's unlikely they would have bothered.

If the labels have been removed I would be suspicious.

I bought my Z32 from a "private" trader who imports a couple of cars at a time, supposedly for his own use.

I bought on gut instinct that the car was ok and apart from the electric door mirror falling off as soon as I got home(stuck on with super glue), I didn't have any other problems.

You can't always rely on luck though, so an independent inspection of any potential purchase, would be a good idea.

this is a plus side to it................think of all those spares we're gonna have because most of his sheds will get scrapped

Ah but you shouldnt judge by this alone however :) , as I replaced my driver side belt in 1999 hence I now have a driver side seatbelt label saying 1999.

I will also be changing my passenger side belt soon as the retract mech' is getting a bit ropey(the belts should retract or tighten when the engine stops running I belive - my 1999 drivers belt does this when the engine is switched off).

I think some interior plastic parts have manufacture dates on them(was it AndyP who posted a pic?), but its unlikely you'll be allowed to start unbolting bits on someone elses motor! :D

Cheers,

Cant get that link to work Gio mate :( . anyone else?

Just checked it and it works fine clicking from here. bloody bill gates again.

Perhaps try going to http://www.300zx.org.uk and manually clicking on the misc info button?

JeffTT has a list of vin numbers and corresponding years of manufacture.

not sure if he wants loads of peeps ringing him to find out if theres is ligit though.

Date code is on the inside of the rear light covers (in the boot).

Easy to remove and check, again they may have been changed.

Only way to be sure is via the VIN

I can verify the manufacturing date of any Jap Zed and probably most UK ones as well. Just send me the full chassis and model numbers for Jap cars or the VIN code for UK models.

Easiest option is to email me a photo of the VIN plate.

Hi,

It's best to buy on the car's condition rather than the alleged year. It's also possible that a 1990 car wasn't registered until a later year.

If in doubt as to a trader's or car's legitimacy then walk away!

There's plenty of other fish in the sea!.
