...so recently, the radio and CD player have developed that wirring, groaning noise in the background related to engine speed. I've removed the unit and checked all of the connections and the earth. All look ok, and the noise is still there. Anyone got any ideas where to look next and what I should be looking for (ie could it be a poor earth on the ariel?)

...any suggestions gratefully received.

thanks

Jack

Try wiring your earth directly to frame, rather than using any ground wires. If you have an aftermarket amplifier, do the same with their grounds, er earths.

...the earth (ground) comes straight out of the back of the radio/CD player and is connected to the bodywork by a 10mm self tapper. Is this what you mean by 'directly to frame'.

thanks

Yep, that would be what I meant. In my previous experience, on other cars granted, some harnesses ground into other devices, which is cause for a ground loop noise. I haven't had the "pleasure" of working on the Z's audio. Sounds like you have a ground loop somewhere. Really don't know where though. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

...thanks for the info - at least I now know that the problem has a name (ground loop). You say you've not had the pleasure of working on Zs, in that case, where should I look assumind my car was a more common vehicle...

I just reread your original post. You say it just started doing this recently? Not after any install or system modification? That is odd. I would have told you to check the connection, ensure that it isn't a painted part of the frame, and/or that the wire hasn't been coupled with anything else or extended. But if this just started happening, I'm thinking that a wire may have rattled loose? Never really heard of this just spontainiously happening.

...it beats me too - all I've done recently is new disks and pads. Thanks anyway for your ideas.
