  • We did a video earlier this week, the Z hasn't been out the garage since July 2020. So happy for this, this is miles away from professional video, and the guy who helped me with the drone and editing,

As I said in my previous post mondo, for the sake of the thread I'm not continuing.. But its a case of having respect for eachother.. If somebody of any age implies someone is stupid (jokingly or otherwise) on a public forum, I believe this to be disrespectful.

As I wrote previously, I've never been seen to write anything disrespectful or negative about anyone's cars here.. I was taught from a young age, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!

Just a last word on the scoops.. They have been fitted to the car since 2004. I personally don't mind them as they give the car a different look but i have thought of removing them as I love the oem lines of the car also.

However, if I removed them, I'm sure you'll understand that the paint below will be a darker shade due to the sun's damaging rays.. So it's not just a case of removing the scoops as I'd have to respray the original paint or I'd end up with a multicoloured bonnet!

So, until the time comes that I need a respray and can afford to spend a couple of grand at least to have it done, the vents stay for obvious reasons!

Anyways... Back to the threads point from here on in..

We all have different Z's and we all have different opinions, which is good. This is a forum for chat about our 300zx's and if you don't like something about another 300zx then you have the right to say it. Of course if you are being down right nasty to someone you will be moderated but this seldom happens. Banter is good but remember typed words sound different to spoken words so have a think how it comes across before posting.

Sooo, as this is a 'What did you do to you're car today?' thread, I did this yesterday

Which i was told I was a silly billy for not thinking to change the pulleys, but I really can't afford it and truthfully they are for the 120k change.

And refurbed some rusty heater pipes

Mileage doesn't really matter as much if you're talking about something that may not have been changed for multiple decades.

Totally agree. I'm F**ked off of reading comments that are" IMO" or " I must say" . Quite frankly, it's childish and does not go down well. I have never made a negative comment about anyone's Zed, God knows we pump enough love and cash into our cars and if someone said the things to me that I read on here face to face, I would react, strongly. I don't like keyboard warriors and trolls. Piss me off.

I know I know. It did have a cambelt change at 60k, now 74k so the tensioner COULD have been changed, but I'm flat broke ATM and I need to buy+replace cracked shocks so in my mind,

broken suspension > some not broken pulleys.

All a balance of money vs future proofing. Obviously I don't have as much experience as others so I don't know how important it is.

Pulleys > suspension on a car that won't be turning a wheel any time soon. Far less expensive to replace shocks than to replace an engine.

I've always been of the mind that these service kits (60k, 120k) work really well if the car's had the same owner for a lot of years - so they'd know just how much action the pulleys and tensioners have seen.

Because of the nature of these engines, I'd personally be far more inclined to have peace of mind under the bonnet than replacing something that isn't going to be needed for a fair while.

Not not less expensive to fix a weekend car that has slid on its body straight into a wall.

The car has done less than 1000km from import in 2004, and has been sitting in a garage for over 5 years. I couldn't tell you how much action they have seen, but it doesn't look like much IMO.

I agree with mondo, the engine in these cars is the heart. I am not in the position to spend much and is the reason for selling my spares.. But, I'm selling them to safeguard the engine.

If it's not a daily driver and you have the valuable time to recon some of the most important parts of the engine, I would always put the engine first..

In comparison it's like needing a heart transplant but buying a pair of trainers... You won't be walking in them if your heart packs up!

You have a "spare" car that you can cannibalise a shock or two from if necessary!

It feels like we're back to "ignore all advice because reasons" again here, which could be a very costly mistake for you. But hey, it's your car so spend your money on what you deem to be important :thumbup1:

Hey that's what it sounds like isn't it, problem is that the 'spare' is a 200mile odd away so it's not a quick job. And it's more or less a complete car so anything I take I will have to replace eventually.

The fact of the matter is that I simply can't afford it (I know right, I bought a high powered car and complain I can't afford it) at least for stuff that isn't broken.

Deadline is beginning of July, but unlike you peeps I don't get a paycheck so it's hard for me to justify spending upwards of £120 on some pulleys that aren't broken, when I have no money to spend on that.

As much as you try to advise me l, I am sort of in a difficult position because I can't spend that money, and I can't drive the car with broken suspension.

Right I'm off to the shed to finish painting my cannibalised headlight inserts... Lacquer time :sweatdrop:

I fear you're looking at this all wrong.

Your pulleys may not be broken right now, but you have precisely no way whatsoever to know how much life they have left in them. As this is an interference engine, it will most likely end up wrecked should one or more of them let go while it's running and believe me, if you can't afford £120 now you won't be able to afford a replacement engine should that happen!

What's this July deadline all about?

Maybe, of course I don't know how much life they have left, I think it is unlikely they should break with no visible signs of damage, what do I know.

Coventry mate, no point in having a car in the garage for two years without actually having some fun out of it.

Think of it like a morning-after pill. If you can't afford it, then you definitely need it!

If I can't afford it, I might need it, but I still can't afford it. lol

These are the questions I asked myself when I bought my Shortie in October 2014:

Does it come with a bucketful of receipts?

Does it come with a service history?

Do I know for sure that it's been meticulously cared for by all it's previous owners?

Can I afford a new engine if this one blows up?

Based on the answers, I got it booked in with Lee Dent for a full service and healthcheck. Peace of mind... well worth the money :)

Ish, for parts such as the SBC and expensive parts, but no maintenance parts.

Does it come with a service history?

Hasn't got one, been in a shed since 2004, Martin revived it, sold to me

Do I know for sure that it's been meticulously cared for by all it's previous owners?

No, its been in a shed, probably beaten on in Japan

Can I afford a new engine if this one blows up?

No, so my swb will be my new car :)

My Dad assures me that they are unlikely to break, despite the advice to change them, this time I think I will have to stand my ground to the dissatisfaction of others. If it breaks, blame me completely but I really can't see them breaking, and they aren't even on the 60k kit to replace.

I'd prefer for this to not become a bigger deal than it already is. Lets get this back to a WDYDTYZT thread :)

I'm pretty sure you said this car had 74k on the clock, so what's a 60k service got to do with anything...?

Do what you want....

On that note... Test fitted the new light inserts for my Z after a last coat of lacquer.. Might have to wet and dry them then give another coat cos the finish isn't as perfect as I'd like.. But after a kwik refit, they do follow my theme nicely...

Can't wait to get the engine bay parts back and get them fitted.. When it all comes together it'll be sweet!

Just a quick question.. Does anyone know where I can get coloured braided fuel lines for the engine bay?

Didn't your wheel fall off :wack:

If one falls off Alic, just pile some bricks up in the opposite corner... You've still got another three..

Just picked her up from my mate who does Valeting. Really happy with both inside and out now, ready now for JAE and the nicer weather.
