For the time being you need one that is no more than 50x50 pixels. BTW these are Craigs rules for size in order to keep bandwidth utilisation in check - smart move.

i recently adjusted the pixels to 100x100, to get a bit more clarity, but there is still a very small file size limit, so you have to put your image skills to good use :D

 

once the board has been running for a few weeks, we can get some ideas about the bandwidth usage, and adjust avatars, signatures, and pics in posts in general to suit.

Since most of your readers are regular - this shouldn't be too much of a problem, as the images will be cached... Just a thought...
