GPS Speeding Camera detectors - Which one and where to buy???

I want one, which is the best one?

Do you have one?

I had a look on SafeAndSounds website, no info there although I remember Bob sells one of the models.

Also Grasshopper? Is it just me or does the site not not work?

Where is a good place to buy one?

----

As far as I can make out from various web sites the three models are:

Morpheous Geodesy Plus £389 (12m free) + £30/year

http://www.snooper.co.uk/geodesygps.htm#new

Origin Blue i + 5m antanna £393 (6m free) + £50/year

http://www.originbluei.com

Bell road angel - £373 (12m free) + £49/year

http://www.beldirect.co.uk/road-angel.htm

It looks like the Origin blue is best as it's directional, if the camera is pointing the other way it doesn't go off. Its also shows your current speed, direction and talks etc... and has a 5m aerial so you can mount it anywhere in the car. The Origin and Morph only go off if you are exceeding the speed limit.

What do you lot know, where can I get a good deal?

see ya!

Jez,

i have a Road Angel on trial at the moment, which i got from Blackspot Interactive, the manufacturers.

They offered a bundle deal with the laser jammer if anyone wanted one, which was 580 with jammer. you can wire the jammer to it as an extra interface, and so you can update the Angel with common traps.

It is quite good, and most of the sites are also tagged as directional, so doesnt go off for cameras on the other side of the road.

you can also add or delete your own sites to it with a couple of button presses, shows your speed, and also has an "export gps" function so you can hook it up to a pc and use it as a gps receiver for other software.

it has some accident blackspots programmed in too, not just camera locations, and also "regular" time/distance recording locations. it also has the "dont warn below speed limit" function, although i havent got that working for some reason

however, i must admit, having seen the info that the origin unit gives on screen, road number, camera direction etc, it does look a lot nicer.

i cannot really fault the road angel though, apart from when bad satellite coverage had my speed at 221 mph the other day.. lol

Thanks craig....

The road angel spec doesn't seam to mention some of the things you're saying... sounds better than I thought.

If it didn't have the pc interface I'd still be up for the origin blue, but then again will I really ever use it.

The road angel you can carry to another car, but the origin is nice when you can mount things perhaps a little more nice or permanently... I assume... but I guess you still need to find a good place to mount it.

The annoying thing is one day I want a gps street finder thing and I know you have to buy the gps aerial again... poo!

Maybe I'll give Bob a call soon.

Tell me - what happens when you go through a tunnel and it looses the gps signal???? :)

you can also get a separate gps aerial with the road angel, and mount it more permanently if you want.

to be honest, the origin looks much nicer and gives more info on the display, but do you really need to know which road you are on, and whether the camera is front or back facing ?

you want to slow down when warned, regardless, imho

the thing i like most about the road angel is the ability to add and remove sites yourself.

it does seem to remember what it was doing before you went into the tunnel, when you come out, so it carries on beeping if it was doing that

but it depends on how fast it can regain the signal as to whether it becomes operational again right away afterwards

Yes, but the road angel aerial is extra cash, but, to be honist it would be nice to take it to other peoples cars on a long journey and I probably dont need it.

Out of interest, does the road angel show the current speed limit?

The current road would be nice, I've got lost so many times reciently!... and I suppose I could take a cheap laptop and plug it into auto route.... have you tried this????

Why does adding new sites help, surely everything should already be in there?

I am totally put off from buying the snooper model as it warns on all cameras which ever way you are driving.

Tell me, is the warning loud enough??? I bought a snooper S1 a while ago and sold it again as the warnings were too quiet and pleasent, especially when you are playing music.

The origin blue has a Motorway feature - sounds warnings only for speed traps which are sited on the motorway network. Would this be of any use, how do you find the road angel on the moterway?

The origin is also software updatable, although probably not necessary.

If I wanted to buy the road angel now, how much would it be (I don't need a laser jammer package)? I think I'm sold on this one now?

Ohh - so many questions!!!!

I tried Autoroute with a GPS and I found quite a few problems. First it doesnt follow the car. There is a symbol of the car on the map of where you are, but the screen didnt follow it. Also if you make a route I would have thought the computer puts arrows on the screen where to go when you get close. No!. Non of that.

And it only updates ever few seconds. Dont forget a cheap Laptop good enough for Autoroute will cost you about £600 for a 2nd hand one, then the GPS, cheapest is £120 and you really need an external ariel for the GPS whish is another £60 or so. And then you have loads of wires. Laptop power (If you are going on a long trip) GPS power (Unless you want to spend loads on Batteries) GPS to Laptop connection (Which costs more) and then the GPS aerial you end up with a mass of wires.

You then are very nervous about leaving your car cos you have a laptop in it and you cant always carry it with you./

You need to add locations yourself for a few reasons:

Mobile speed traps are not in the database so you might know a local spot where the police often try to catch you with a laser speed gun or mobile gatso.

You can add your own accident blackspots.

You can mark out the top pubs in your area to remind you to stop off for a beer or mark your house so you know when you are home...

You say you don't need a laser jammer but without one you are still going to get caught by the pigs with a hand held unit.

The only times I have been done for speeding it has been by a cop hiding behind a bush with a radar gun.

I know that all radar guns have been replaced with laser now though.

The motorway only feature sounds like a waste of time as there are hardly any traps on the motorways anyway and what happens when you come off the sliproad and forget to switch it back to normal? There are far more traps on normal A roads.

Without a radar detector you can't pick up mobile gatso cameras.

I've got a Bell 980 radar/laser detector and it works really well but the problem with laser detection is that by the time you hear the beeps the cop has more than likely already got you.

The only thing it will do is pick him up if he scans a car in front of you etc.

For total protection you need a GPS type device, radar and laser detector and a laser jammer. Expensive!

Chrisc - Yes, I already have a laser jammer - that's why I don't need one. I see your points

I want to throw my radar detector away as it tells me about everything I don't need to know (shops doors etc), are you sure no-one uses radar guns... sounds like I really don't need it???

Sprae - see your points too ! all of them ! - I was thinking more of linking the gps to the laptop for the odd journey and I already have a cheap laptop I could use.. but from what you are saying it seams a waste of time!

???:)
