Just done the autobox diagnostics and fault no.2 came up speed sensor .Can i clear this code in anyway and recheck?is there a short list of factors that can cause this fault?(its a 91 import TT)i'm guessing this fault could put me in safety mode to?

Normally you would use conzult or datascan to reset the codes but I think I'm right in saying that if you disconnect the battery for 10-30 mns it clears the codes as well, I maybe wrong on that though. The error just means that ecu can't connect to the speed sensor, so check the wiring etc.

If the speed sensor is faulty then the ecu won't be able to adjust fuelling etc as it won't know what speed it's doing, so with that in mind there's a very good chance that it's now in safety mode.

Sorry I can't be more definite but I've never had the problem. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

cheers mate, cleared the engine codes after sourcing a problem in the engine by disconnecting battery.but still in safety.sometimes it does feel like it is pulling away in 2nd (if in D) but will go through the gears 1,2,then d etc

The autobox will not work correctly with no speed signal, the signal comes from the sensor in the gearbox via the speedo head unit.

So if the speedo is working ok then the sensor is ok, its possible that the output from the speedo head is the issue, does the hicas light come on at all? or does the cruise control not work, it would make sense for the fault to nbe more widespread tha just the autobox unless of course the issue is with the ecu for the gearbox or the wiring to it.

Be worth pulling the ecu for the gearbox and checking the connector and loom, if you jack up the rear wheels and secure safely then with an assistant you could run it in gear and check the signal cable at the gearbox ecu, will give you an indicator if the ecu is faulty or not.

awesome piece of info, before i read this on my way home i noticed my cruise control wasn't working (the hicas light is on but i have a pas leak to although its topped up,steering is notchey was thinking it was the pump but am thinking theres more to it now.where do i go now?

Ok so is the speedo working? if it is that proves the speed sensor is ok, but points to the output from the speedo head not working, this is the point where all other speed related things get their signal from, usually means a new speedo head is required or if your lucky a bad connection or soldered joint on the board.

speedo is all good,i have read people with a similar problems usually involing the kmh/mph converter.ill take the clocks out (i take it the speedo head is back there?)and have a look

jeff just reading what you have put on here, i have noticed that my speedo aint working and that was from when i got it in sept, i have taken the clock out before i go further down to the box(manual) but read with interest what you said about the hicas light being on which mine is,would that be a problem with mine? , i noticed a small leak from the union join quiet a bit up at the back im big and the car is low and it gets frigging dark to quick.so wasnt sure that the light being on was due to low fluid but it was topped up.

My speedo only ever works when it feels like it, same goes for my power steering but the 2 don't seem to be linked as they both go on and off at completely different times. My zed a manual n/a, the the question is.... Is it the speed sensor at fault or the kph 2 mph convertor?

Also the speedo has occasionally jumped round and sat off the scale (roughly where 200mph would be if it went that high), would this be part of the same issue?

Sorry for jumping in on this thread.

Its alright maybe more heads are better than 1.i only have 3 problems the steering,no cruise control (was working) and fault no.2 on the autobox.speedo has never failed.when I get my clocks out and look ill repost.sick of safety mode thought is was the maf changed it ran so much better but still in safety.the car has had so much spent on it (don't know the full extent of the engine mods)and has been really looked after since import.
