Still clunking along - bushes didn't help..

Hi All,

Finally got my tension rod bushes replaced at the weekend. Main reason was to try and stop the awful clunking noises I get when applying the brakes in reverse, can't be healthy!! There is a slight improvement and I reckon it's handling better but I still have the clunk - worse on the passenger side than drivers. Can the caliper mounts themselves become worn and noisy?? What else could it be? I think AndyDuff has mentioned top suspension linkages....

The replacement bushes are a slightly wider bore than the originals meaning there is a small amount of free play between the bolt and the sleeve - is this normal??

Thanks in advance!

Rob, tighten the pivot bolts more wink.gif These have to be incredibly tight or else you get the banging you described wink.gif You ideally need the car above your head and get a long bar to get the torque wink.gif

Yep, don't bother with a torque wrench, these need to be set to "FT" !

What about the top links Rob - when the wheel is jacked - is there any give - vertically/up n down?

Andy

I have a clunk too that I thought was the bushes but its not.

On the drivers side usually when I turn very hard and it makes the noise when I go over speed bumps too.

What could this be? Same problem as Rob?

Jacked it up and the wheel doesnt move but when you try to wobble the wheel from top to bottom, the wheel doesnt seem move but I think I have hear something.

Is it not possibly the brake pads shunting?

I notice this too and had new poly bushes on ages ago and I think the nuts on the rods are tight. At least they were when I checked with a spanner yesterday. Didnt try a big lever tho.

Better check the bolt thru the poly bush insert in case that is not tight to the insert

hi just thought i would join in with the knocking group LOL!!

got the same symptoms on my z got the new tension bushes fitted and still knocking!!

now i have bought the bushes for the lower arm the wishbone i think, not fitted yet though but if it works i will let u know guys!

p.s bushes from z centre item no2 £25 per set zc0802 lower controll arm bush>

thats strange, i also have a knocking noise. Seemed to get sometime after fitting new bushes. Have had a quick look and found no loose bolts.

Get a 1m breaker bar and I BET you can tighten those pivot bolts up some more wink.gif Not the ones going through the lower link, the single one that the rod pivots around. I could not believe how tight these had to be to stop the knocking sound! Funny how it always tends to happen after the bushes are replaced wink.gif The only other possibility is the top links but you are looking at £££ for these. I am looking into some adjustable replacements at the moments.
